Gino "Peter" Jennewein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 28, 2023.
G. Peter Jennewein was born May 9, 1931 in New Rochelle, NY, the fifth child of Carl Paul Jennewein, a noted sculptor and Gina Pirra Jennewein, an Italian language professor born in Rome. Peter passed away on December 21, with family by his side.

He grew up in Larchmont, NY, receiving a Bachelor of Architecture, Summa Cum Laude and a Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Later, he received a PH.D in Planning while in Italy on (two) Fulbright Grants. The Editors of Record Houses of 1963 included his work in their group of twenty of the finest new architect-designed houses for the year. Peter was licensed in both New York and Connecticut. He had many years of professional experience in planning, architectural design, and construction management of buildings for corporations. His work included large corporations in New York City and Connecticut, as well as residences and churches. He was a member of the Connecticut Society of Architects and the American Institute of Architects.

Peter spoke several languages, had a strong intellect, was an avid reader and loved classical music. He was known to have a quick wit, a great sense of humor, a warm personality and was an excellent conversationalist.

During his lifetime, boating and sailing were always his passion and lasted longer than his architectural career. While in high school, as a teenager, he built a fishing boat affording his father many happy days on Long Island Sound. He was a long time resident of New Canaan which he loved and a member of the New Canaan Congregational Church.

Peter is survived by his wife, Virginia, of almost 52 years, his children, Carlida Sabatino of Masschusettes, Pira Ann Koch, of California, Anne Marie Collier of CT, a son (deceased) John Jennewein, and the children of Virginia Jennewein, Joseph C. Arouni, of CT, and Mary Arouni-Bodkin, of NY. as well as grandchildren and great grand-children.

A memorial service will be held later this year.

Consider donations in his memory to New Canaan EMS, certified Emergency Medical Technicians who volunteer their services in the Town of New Canaan.

He didn't age in all of the 34 years that I've known him. Had a spirit of vitality up until the end that any of us would be lucky to have. He was wonderful to have had in my life.

I worked for Peter straight out of college. He was a consummate professional. I owe a sincere debt of gratitude for all that he taught me about being an architect. Here's a photo of us in the studio at Jennewein Architects circa 1985. I will miss his wit and intellect. All our love to Virginia and family. Andy and Barbara

My boss, mentor, and good friend. He was an "old school" architect, with great knowledge and stories. Always entertaining. He will be missed. RIP GPJ!
