Retired LCDR Glen Dean Myers, Sr. of Ledyard, passed away on April 21st, 2022, at Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT, at the age of 75. Though his passing was unexpected, Glen spent his final moments peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Glen was born in Dallas, Texas, and graduated from Bryan Adams High School. He enlisted the United States Navy in 1967, and during his distinguished career Glen qualified for the Navy Enlisted Scientific Educations program, received his degree in Electrical Engineering from Ole Miss, earned his commission as a US Naval Officer, and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. For 20 years Glen served with honor at posts abord the USS BLUEBACK, the USS BARB, the USS HADDOCK, and as an instructor at the Naval Submarine School. After retiring in 1987, Glen continued to serve and support the Navy for another 20+ years from the private sector.
In his personal life, Glen was a loving husband, devoted father, and doting grandfather who LOVED to take his children and grandchildren fishing, camping, and out to breakfast. He was an avid golfer, loved his pets like family, and served the youth of his community as a Boy Scout Leader. Glen loved genealogy and his research earned him admittance into the national society, Sons of the American Revolution.
Glen is survived by his wife, Deanna Myers; his three children: Melissa Meadows, Glen Myers, Jr., and Julie Spicer; his two siblings: Barbara Smith and Dan Myers; 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and a large extended family.
Calling hours and a service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022, from 4 pm to 6 pm at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.. Services start at 5:30 pm. I was a junior officer when Glen was the navigator on the Haddock. He was a great officer and human. I have many fond memories of him.

Great brother-in-law. A wonderful sense of humor mixed with wisdom. A friend and husband to my sister Deanna. He had a smile that delighted all who saw it. A compassionate man with a love of adventure outdoors. A true blessing to the family. He will be remembered and missed.

LCDR Myers was an excellent Officer and a true Gentleman. I remember after I reported in March 83 I had to go to him for something and he was very polite and helpful. There was no mincing words with him, he expected clear communication which I always appreciated because I always knew where I stood with him. A great man indeed. He will be missed.

Melissa,
Sandy and I were close friends with Glen in San Diego while serving together on the Haddock. Glen was the Navigator on the Haddock and I was the ANav. We made that last WesPac together before Glen transferred to shore duty and went back east. I'm sure you don't remember the last minute change of plans and the scramble to include you and Glen Jr in the drive back east. Glen and I shared many good times and some tough times together. Sandy and I will keep Glen and all of you in our prayers.

Glen is one of my favorite bosses from more than 20 years ago (private sector). He was a wonderful man to work for and with; and I still laugh to myself at his commentary. I am so sorry for your loss as family was always important to him.

Dear Deanna, Melissa, Glen, Julie, and the entire circle of Glen´s family `n´ friends,
I have not had the pleasure of meeting Glen; sounds like I´ve missed out, But, Jon and Melissa are brother/sister in Christ as well as good friends. Understanding the hole a parent leaves behind, regardless the inevitability or forewarning, pray this helps some wee bit...to allow...enable...the grief...which will come...is painfully necessary...but is also a measure of the loving impact this very special man had on your lives! So truly sorry to hear about your father, friend. At least now he´s at peace with our Lord... definitely keepin´ y´all in our prayers!
When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss...inconsolable...she was my mentor! I like to think that I got my character from my father, but my mind and its capacity from m´dear sainted mother!!! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity dearly close...a cherished, hard-won prize...but, in the interim, that answer lies below.
SELFISH TEARS
(I Eulogize My Beloved Mother - March, 1989)
Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!
We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!
So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!

Thank you for the many years of mentoring and guidance as we navigated the submarine new construction process as a team. You were a great friend, I enjoyed the many years of sea stories and get-togethers with friends, but most of all the good laughs we had together. You will be missed. God Bless.

I served aboard the USS Haddock with Glen. He was an outstanding leader and teacher, who was highly respected among the crew and officers alike. I am heartbroken to hear this news. May God wrap His arms of grace and comfort around your entire family during this time. I have uploaded a photo from the change of command ceremony 1984 (Davis to McHugh). I had the privilege of being in the honor guard which Glen led that day.

Glen Myers was an amazing man, one who gave me a ton of life lessons as my grandpa that I didn't know I had learned until sadly he passed away. He taught me about patience and the meaning of life and friends. He lived his life to the fullest every day, whether that was taking my brothers and me fishing and just talking while we waited, or even having breakfast at our favorite diner down the street. The conversations I've had with him and the times I have been able to spend with him have been amazing and bring a smile to my face any time I think about him. I am grateful for every campfire in the backyard during the summer and every rainy day movie marathon I was able to spend with him. He will be greatly missed and loved now and forever.

I had the pleasure to serve with Glen on the USS Haddock. I learned so much from him. He was responsible for me earning my dolphins as he conducted my final ship walk through. A tremendous mentor and a real gentleman. RIP Ops!

Glen was my first boss after I left the Navy in 1988. He hired me on at EG&G to work on the USN AN/BSY-1 Submarine SONAR program. I followed him over to SEA CORP where we worked on numerous SONAR programs. I once again had the opportunity to work with Glen when he was at NAVSEA working Test and Evaluation on the VA Class Submarine Program and I was at Progeny Systems.
Glen was a great boss, co-worker, and most importantly friend. He was a no-nonsense type of man but had a kind heart. He honestly cared for the people around him and went out of his way to help where and when he could. I am a much better person having known and worked with Glen. I am deeply saddened by Glen’s passing. My heartfelt condolences go out to Glen’s family and loved ones. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I served with Glen on the USS BARB (SSN-596) as the Supply Officer before leaving active duty in March 1976. Glen, I, and another officer friend had some great times on liberty and after hours in San Diego where the BARB was homeported after an extended overhaul at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California. I lost contact with Glen when I left active duty, but we re-connected in 2000 with a fellow shipmate and enjoyed an extended email-based nostalgia extravaganza talking about our submarine life and experiences. Nostalgia is a very powerful drug! Our mutual nostalgia was influenced by the recent loss of the Russian submarine, the Kursk, which was prominently featured in the international news and in the online community.
Glen is now on Eternal PatroI. Glen was a great friend and shipmate. I will always remember his happy-go-lucky personality and his cheery smile. May he rest in peace and may the Lord bless & console his family and friends. May the Lord bless & console us all.

I did not have the opportunity to meet my third cousin Glen. I did have some correspondence with him about the prolific Stout and Myers family history. I too am a retired US Navy veteran.
I wish you “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on your ride to eternity.

Dear Deanna, family and friends of Glens,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Glens passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Blueback, USS Barb and USS Haddock.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
Deanna and family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
