Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 22 to Apr. 29, 2016.
Long-time Los Alamos resident, Gloria Louise Cordova, passed away on April 18, 2016 after a 16-month struggle with pancreatic cancer. Gloria was born in Trinidad Colorado on July 31, 1938. After high school she joined the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati and graduated from their Mount St. Joseph College with a B. S. degree in chemistry. She taught math and chemistry in high schools in Denver and Trinidad, and then after leaving the community, moved to Los Alamos where she taught chemistry at the high school for 10 years. In 1979 she joined the Laboratory and over the next 20 years worked in the HR Training Office, the Affirmative Action Office and eventually became Group Leader of the Protocol Office. After retirement in 1999, she completed a Ph.D. in Human Resource Development at the Fielding Graduate University; her dissertation examined the ethnic identity of a group of Northern New Mexico Latinas.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Louis Barron and Cora Carmona Cordova, of Trinidad. She is survived by her husband of 11 years Dan Winske, her sister Teresa Bell and husband Richard of Cokedale Colorado, her cousin Kimberly Souders, husband David and daughter Laurel of Santa Fe, as well as numerous other relatives, friends and colleagues.

Gloria was active in many women's organizations over the years, including the American Association of University Women (AAUW), MANA del Norte and P.E.O. She was also a well-known genealogist, tracing the roots of many of the Hispanic families of New Mexico. Throughout her long career as an educator, an administrator and a scholar, Gloria worked tirelessly to address the concerns and improve the status of working women as well as create positive change and promote education and equity for women everywhere.

A Rosary will be prayed at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church on Thursday evening at 7 PM, after which those in attendance will be invited to share their memories of Gloria. The Rite of Christian Burial celebrating her life will be held at 10 am on April 29 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos. Following the services, a reception will be held at Cross Roads Bible Church located at 97 East Road, Los Alamos, NM 87544. She will be buried after a 10 am church service on Monday May 2 in Trinidad. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gloria's name can be made to the Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Gloria had an amazing presence. I met her in 1995 at the Fielding Doctoral Program Winter Session and kept a friendship with her. Gloria had this amazing ability to make time and distance disappear when we reconnected. Here a photos of Gloria at a 2005 gathering in Santa Barbara celebrating a fellow Fielding student's graduation with Fielding colleagues. Gloria's calm and energy shines through both photos. I continue to value the memory of Gloria's energy and caring. Thank you.

Gloria was my neighbor and classmate at Holy Trinity High School in Trinidad. She always exemplified the desire and fortitude to be the best student and Christian model she could be. I was so impressed with all she has done in life educationally and personally. She will be missed by all who came in contact with her.

Deepest sympathy to the family. The short time I knew her left a lasting impression. What a kind soul and gentle spirt Gloria had. Always with a smile, a kind word, and a hug. Gloria I will miss you, and my life enriched by meeting you.

Gloria will truly be missed. LeRoy was glad to have worked with her at LANL. Her intelligence, integrity, and style were beyond comparison. He was glad to have been able to talk with her in Santa Fe in 2015. We feel honored to have known her. God bless her soul and God sustain her husband and family during their time of mourning. She was my most favorite teacher at LAHS! One day in Chemistry class I was not prepared & scared to death to go up in front of the class & balance chemical equations. She subtly whispered to me "no worries, you don't have to go up if you don't want to." I never forgot that & had the opportunity a few years ago to write her tell her how much that meant to me! She was so kind & caring with her students & truly had a wonderful heart! Class of 71.

Gloria was my classmate at Holy Trinity School in Trinidad way back in the 40's and 50's. She was one of the most brilliant girls in the class. She was always admired by all of us. Gloria kept in touch through all the years. She was looking forward to being with us at our 60th class reunion next July. Of course, she will be missed. We will remember her at our reunion Mass that will be celebrated by our classmate, Father Leonard Mestas. May her soul rest in peace.

My heart weeps, my soul rejoices for Gloria's loving soul. Praying that God continue to bless each of Gloria's extended family -- and most especially, May God comfort her beloved husband of these past 11 years. Gloria was blessed in this life time by her husband, and by her sister, and by all who loved her.
