Harold Mitchell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 31, 2016.
Harold "Mitch" Mitchell Feb. 16, 1923 – Jan. 26, 2016

Mitch passed away in the loving care of Citrus Valley Hospice on Tuesday, January 26 battling cancer. He was surrounded by his family and friends as he entered into heaven. Mitch was born February 16, 1923 in Belle Plaine, Kansas to James Albert Mitchell and Mabel Fern Edrington. He came to California when he was 16. He graduated from his beloved alma mater, Belmont High School in Los Angeles. Mitch worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad until he entered the Air Force in Jan. 1943, serving for three years. He was stationed on Tinian Island during the war as part of the 509th Bomb Group and the famous Enola Gay.

Mitch joined the Covina Police Department in 1955 and retired as a Police Sergeant after serving 18 years. He then went on to the Bank of America for another 18 years as a Special Investigator. He received his B.S. from Cal State Los Angeles and an M.S. in Criminology from Cal State Long Beach while working full-time. An amazing accomplishment.

Mitch met his wife, Joanne, while they both worked for the City of Covina where they fell in love and got married on September 13, 1958. They have one daughter, Cynthia Elaine Payne (Joe) and one daughter, from his previous marriage, Kathleen Sue Lindstrom, who has two daughters, Krystal Hutcheson (Kurt) and Sarah Sablowski. Mitch had one brother, Charles David Mitchell, who died in 1974.

Upon retirement, Mitch became the 'permanent' Treasurer of the Angler Class of Christ First Baptist Church, Covina, and a long-time "counter" on Sundays. His many talents included
tutoring math students, painting and wall-papering, and a fix-anything man. His life-long passion was the Chicago Cubs and his favorite hobby was golf with his buddy, Frank Crouse. Mitch supported South Hills Football from 1979 until last year when it became too difficult to climb the stands. And his favorite place on earth was June Lake in the Sierras. His infectious laugh and kind heart endeared him to all who knew him.

A celebration of life service will be held at Christ First Baptist Church Covina, 200 N. Second Ave., on Friday, Februay 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m

Very sorry to hear of your loss. Mitch and my husband, Winters "Tex" Payne, served on the Covina P.D. together in the 1950's. Mitch was a wonderful friend and co-worker.

I looked up "quintessential good neighbor" in the dictionary, and there was a picture of Mitch and of course Joanne. Then I looked up "blessings from heaven".....and there they were again. Thanks Mitch for always being there for us.

I'm so touched by the messages left here. I'm so glad my Dad touched so many people. He was the sweetest, kindest man I ever knew (and very smart, too!). He never spanked me, or spoke harshly to me. He just loved me unconditionally. I will miss you so much, Daddy. Rest In Peace.

Love, your daughter Cyndi

Cyndi and I became best friends when we were three years old so having known Mitch for fifty years, I have too many memories to share here. . .all of them wonderful. . .so I will just say thank you for loving me always and treating me like a daughter. You have included me, accepted me, sometimes got upset with me (like when I spilled my shake at Bob's Big Boy) but always loved me. My life has been blessed because of your generosity and kind heart. Although I am sad that you are no longer with us, I thank God that He blessed me with the gift of you.

With much love and prayers,
Denise
