Howard LEYTON-BROWN Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Jan. 16, 2017.
LEYTON-BROWN, Howard
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Howard Leyton-Brown, on Friday, January 13, 2017. He is again with his beloved wife Myrl (nee Walker), who died in 2011, bringing an end to their marriage of 67 years. In his immediate family he is survived by his daughter Jill; sons Kenneth and David (Anne); granddaughter Allison; grandson Kevin (Jude); and great-granddaughter Emily. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Frances; sister Valerie; and brother Eric. Howard was born in Melbourne, Australia, on December 19, 1918, and raised in that city. At an early age he demonstrated an extraordinary talent for music, and in 1937 he left Australia to study violin in Europe, with Carl Flesch and Max Rostal. World War II interrupted these studies and Howard enlisted in the Royal Air Force, serving as a pilot in Bomber Command and also as an instructor and examiner with the Commonwealth Pilot Training Program. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his wartime service. While stationed in Estevan, Saskatchewan he met his future wife, Myrl, and she joined him in England in 1944; it was there, after the war, that his two sons were born. After the war Howard resumed studying violin under Max Rostal, in London, England, and earned the Licentiate of the Guildhall School of Music, receiving the highest marks ever awarded in the British Isles. He subsequently performed as a soloist and also served as Leader of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1952 the family relocated to Regina, Canada, where his daughter was born. He accepted a position as Head of the String Department of the Regina Conservatory of Music, becoming Director in 1955, and was appointed Director of the Western Board of Music Examination system in 1953. He held both directorships until his retirement in 1987. Howard remained active as a soloist and conductor, notably of the Regina Symphony Orchestra, and served on the boards of many organizations dedicated to music and the performing arts. He was founding Chair of the Department of Music at the University of Regina, earned a doctorate from the University of Michigan and continued to contribute, as he was able, long after retirement, teaching until 2016. He was the recipient of many honours, the most significant of which include being named a Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1955, Member of the Order of Canada in 1991, Member of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 1996, and Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour in 2015. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina, SK S4P 2R3. The family express their appreciation for the kindness and sympathy of the staff in ward 4A at the Pasqua Hospital. I remember him from the summer of 1963 at the Peace Garden Music Camp on the U.S.-Canadian border. I was but 12 but I still remember him vividly for his musicianship and leadership. I shall also remember him leading the put-together ensemble of musicians from everywhere in the Corelli Concerto Grosso #1 and what a marvelous "spin" they put on it.

Belated but nevertheless heartfelt respect and condolences to all the family. My father was a Lancaster pilot on 576 Squadron during WW2 - the same Squadron that Howard so bravely served.
Thank you sir for our freedom, blue skies always and please have a beer with my dad

My history with Dr. Leyton-Brown began with my grandmother Elsie Langille, my piano teacher and member of St Andrew's United Church Choir which he conducted. My parents Stan and Norma Jack Thompson took me early to Regina Symphony concerts until I started playing the cello, and during my BMus programme I had the opportunity to both play under his leadership in the orchestra and have him as my professor for conducting. When there was a gap of cello teachers just before Ray Hoffman arrived, he became my teacher, and I had the joy of learning one of the Bach cello suites with him. This was one of the greatest learning experiences of my life. When I did my performance exam, he was there in the wings cheering me on. I have continued to play cello until last year with the Mississauga Symphony, and only regret that I did not make a trip back to see him in Regina. I have made this a personal story, as I believe that Dr. Leyton-Brown's legacy is living on in many professional and ordinary musicians, perhaps more than you the family may ever know. I only have one perspective of his life, but know he has touched the lives of many of us who will continue to live out the gifts we have been given, in great thankfulness for his life.

I had the privilege of studying violin with Howard 1955 to 1957 at the top of the stairs in Darke Hall. Having completed the ARCT and First year at Luther College I had to decide whether to go on in music or medicine, Howard helped me make that decision-do both! I continue to play viola in the Stratford Syymphony and think of this survivor of Bomber Command often.

My deepest condolences to Ken, Jill and the whole family. I know that mere words cannot do justice to how much Dr. Howard changed our community for the better, though I will try to share my gratitude. Dr. Howard taught me not only the fundamentals of music, his patience and guidance helped me become a better, stronger person. Gardening alongside Dr. Howard was very entertaining (he had a story for every flower), and the irises and raspberry shoots he gave me continue to bring me great joy every year. My time spent under his tutelage - from my early years ('91-'93)with the University orchestra at Darke Hall, until I spoke with him at my last convocation (2015) - have truly been highlights of my life. The impact of his work goes far beyond any one of us and lives on in those of us lucky enough to have spend time with him.
God Bless.

I was sad to hear about Howard. My father was a colleague of his in the sixties. I was 16 when we came to Canada and your family were so very welcoming. I have a vivid memory of playing tennis with Howard in Wascana Park. His serves were wicked and he certainly didn't spare me. He was a anextraordinary man and I have a number of friends who were his students and have gone on to have fine careers in music. My husband joins me in sending you, David, Kenneth an Jill, our deepest sympathy.

I just want to express my warm thoughts at this sad time. I had the wonderful opportunity to get to know this wonderful gentle man and see how he could open his heart to others. I seen this both with how he welcomed me as a youth at the curling rink as I would tag along and he brought me onto his team whenever he was short at the u of r league and later how he would welcome and treat his students when I got the opportunity to work at the Conservatory of Music. He will always a place in my heart for his friendship and wont be forgotten.

To the Leyton-Brown family - I was Howard's secretary for many years. He was a generous, fair and honourable man. I sang in many of the choirs he directed and later taught singing at the Conservatory when he was Director. I am grateful for the patience and caring qualities he exhibited in teaching violin to my son, David. Regina has lost a visionary who did much for the cultural community in Regina. My condolences are with all of the Leyton-Brown family at this time.

In reading the brief summary of Dr. Leyton-Brown's life one gets a picture of a man who was not only a musician of rare exceptional talent and intelligence but also a human being and personal role model of the highest caliber.
It was my great privilege to study violin with Dr. Leyton-Brown for several years as a child and into my teens. The lessons and principles he patiently and graciously imparted each week went far beyond the study of music and have served me well throughout my life. In this, I know I speak for many who knew and studied under him.
Thank you Howard. You will always be fondly remembered.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Howard Leyton-Brown. I recall seeing him often and chatting with him during my years of violin lessons from John Thornicroft at the Regina Conservatory of Music at the Darke Hall between 1947 and 1954. He was an inspiration to me as I attended some of his recitals (I still play my violin as a member of the Mississauga Symphony). I was also very impressed with him in connection with his service in the RAF Bomber Command. He was a kind, generous, and very talented human and my life was made more rich by our acquaintanceship.
I wish his family well, and know that their memory of him will make their lives happier in the years to come.

Sad to hear the passing of Dr. Leyton-Brown. Was able to study with him for a couple of years and the technical expertise he was able to pass on to me has proved most valuable over the years. He was one of the cornerstones of the wonderful string programme that enriched the lives of myself and so many others growing up in Regina.

I'm sorry to hear of Howard's passing. It is the end of an era in Regina's musical history and of the Conservatory that he directed, served and mentored so well. I met him in 1974 when my wife Anne and I sang in the Conservatory Choir under his direction. In 1976 he hired me to teach classical guitar at the conservatory - and I am still there. I have known him as a friend and colleague since then. He sparkled on stage when he organized and directed the "Sing Along" Messiah in Darke Hall - free to all participants. His wisdom, knowledge and guidance were always appreciated. We had a continuing discussion about whether the violin or the guitar was the more complex and difficult instrument to master. I will miss his presence.

We will miss him beyond what words can say. He was such a positive influence on Resa. She loved his energy, passion, stories and skill. Even though he couldn't play his violin along with her, he would dance the rhythm. He helped her really understand how the piece should be played, why the composer composed in such a way.

To Jill and family. Your dad was an exceptional man who inspired me to dig deeper into the enigmatic mystery we call music. If songs are batteries in which we store memories and emotions, your dad was the power station that charged those batteries for thousands. What an impressive dedicated life he lived and he truly made his mark on the world leaving nothing but light and the joy of melodies of life in his wake.
