Howard Rosenthal Obituary

Howard N Rosenthal, MD

May 22, 1928 - May 27, 2014

Howard N Rosenthal, 86, of San Mateo died peacefully on May 27th, 2014, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Howard was born in Baltimore, MD on May 22nd, 1928. He is survived by his 3 children; Ann, Ruth and Jesse, their spouses and 6 grandchildren.

He received his undergraduate degree from Amherst College, then graduated from New York University with a medical degree. While he was in medical school, he met the late Marjorie Nachman, his loving wife of 51 years.

After moving with his family to California in 1959, he entered into private practice and worked as an Ob/Gyn. He volunteered many years for Planned Parenthood and in 1985, after retiring from private practice, he served as the Medical Director until 1999.

Howard was a generous and loving person, selflessly donating his time to causes he felt passionate about; among them being Suicide Prevention, Family Service Agency and the San Mateo Public Library, often taking a leadership role.

He enjoyed a variety of physical activities over the years, from being a star lacrosse player in high school to skiing into his 80's and being an avid bicyclist until his passing.

He was a charming, outgoing and giving individual. He had an incredible sense of humor and lived his life with a dignity and grace that inspired all who knew him, staunchly liberal to the core.

Per his request there will be no services at this time. Donations can be made in his honor to Planned Parenthood.

Howard, it was an absolute honor to work with you at Planned Parenthood. You were an amazing physician and teacher. However, what I will remember most, are the years of comfort and laughter you brought to my work days.

Howard and his late wife lived across the street from us in Burlingame until they moved to San Mateo. He was a lovely neighbor, generous in spirit and always friendly with a story to tell. Every year at the holidays he brought fresh holly sprigs from his holly tree to many of us on the block. RIP

One of my all time favorite physicians and a wise and kind fellow healer at PPGG. I learned so much from him! I will cherish his memory. He taught me to be humble and trust my patient's wisdom....
