Born in Papa, Hungary, on Aug. 6, 1953, she was a daughter of the late Lajos and Iren (Pillar) Valentin.
She and her family survived the Hungarian Revolution and moved to the United States, where they started their lives speaking no English. Eventually, Iren and her family became proud American citizens.
Her early education took place in Hungary. Iren finished her education in 1974 at Reading Evening High School.
In 1975, she graduated from Empire Beauty Schools. Iren was awarded a diploma from Empire Beauty School as a teacher in cosmetology in 1977.
She was a member of Sigma Pi Epsilon Professional Esthetics Society.
Iren was also awarded a certificate from the International School for Estheticians and Make-Up Specialists in New York.
In 1988, she was awarded a Certificate of Advanced Learning in the arts and sciences of creative cosmetology. She was an official member of Le Club VIVA. She also holds certification from the Helene Curtis Institute of Advanced Hairstyling.
Iren was also awarded a certificate in hair design from Pivot Point International and became a master hair designer in 1978. Also in that year, Iren was awarded certificates from Empire Beauty Schools in skin and nail care treatments.
In 1984, Iren earned a Certificate of Advanced Learning from the Gallery.
Iren owned and operated her own salon from her home in Exeter Township for many years. She also spent many years teaching cosmetology.
Iren was a metaphysician and taught meditation. She held meditation and metaphysical seminars in local venues, introducing others to the world of metaphysics.
The failing health of her mother caused her to close her salon and stop teaching entirely. Iren's own health challenges in later life never stopped her beautiful smile or gentle ways.
She was predeceased by a brother, Enci; and her beloved cat of 20 years, Charley.
She is survived by her close companion and caretaker, Kay; and many friends and associates. Her beautiful smile and gentle ways will be missed greatly.
Services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Auman Funeral Home, 247 Penn St., Reading, where friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. The Rev. Edith Gettis will officiate. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
