I had the great privilege to know, and work with, Irv Faust while serving as Superintendent of Schools in Garden City. Irv was an incredible guidance counselor who worked diligently with every one of the students assigned to him to guide them through their high school careers and beyond. A warm and inspiring educator, we would converse often, and I came to appreciate Irv not only as a fine educator, but also as a wonderful human being. Long after I left Garden City, Irv and I were able to communicate with one another. I will always remember Irv Faust as a gentleman, a fine scholar, a wonderful educator, and a one-of-a kind human being.

I met Dr. faust through his wonderful wife Jean when I was a ballet student at the School of American ballet. In passing this great educator assisted me with any small academic endeavors I undertook. Over the years he assisted my sister, who was applying from florida, with a successful application to Columbia University, and years later assisted me in an application to Fordham University. Neither I or my sister had any affiliation with GCHS yet he was there for us with his great passion for education and literature. My sister and I remember Irv as a mentor, an educator, and a great friend. Thank you for your generosity Dr. Faust.

I worked with Dr. Faust for eight years at Garden City High School. As his secretary, I got to know him not only as a scholar, but as a kind, caring and honorable man.

He touched my life and my son's in so many positive ways.

Dr. Faust was my guidance counselor, and I still regret disappointing him by not going to the University of Chicago. It never occurred to me when I was younger that people at the high school would want to hear from former students, and later it all seemed too long ago and far away. I am sorry I didn't get in touch: I know I missed a wonderful person I could only have appreciated as an adult. My sympathy to his family and all his friends.

Greatly saddened as I am by Irv's passing, I would like to assert my gratitude and affection for him in two ways.

I met Irv professionally when I first began teaching at Garden City H. S. in September of 1962. For the next 32 years, I learned day by day what a giant of a man he was in his profession. It seemed that nearly every week I would hear some student testify to the help he or she had received from Irv, and it seemed that I could never go to a conference without my hearing, "Oh, you work with Dr. Faust of GCHS. All of us know about him. We wish we had a Dr. Faust. "

As the years passed, I immensely valued the times when he would have a few minutes to chat in his office about kids and education and books and his writing. I always left his office inspired about how much he loved his work and the students and parents he served and how fortunate GCHS was to have him. We spent time talking about his fiction, and I am pretty sure that I read just about every word he wrote. All the reviewers were correct about Irv's deep humanity and his crystalline prose. Also, Irv was very encouraging to me as I labored at N. Y. U. for my M. A. and Ph. D. I could always count on him as a sounding board when I became stuck at some point on my dissertation. At these and many other times, the professional educator, the writer, and the understanding friend merged into one person to help a younger educator struggle with the demands of teaching, learning, and raising a family.

Secondly, I owe much to Irv for the attention he afforded my three children as they went through GCHS. The eldest, my son, was assigned to Irv, and he received the same sterling attention about which I had heard other students and parents comment. Irv guided him through the intricacies of choosing yearly programs, helped him navigate the usual standardized exams, and advised him about the intricacies of college admissions. As was customary in our school, subsequent children in the same family would have different counselors, and we were all confident that the girls would be in good hands, On a number of occasions, I drew on his advice for various curriculum and college acceptance matters to buttress whatever my daughters learned elsewhere. All three of the kids received very solid acceptances and were very happy with their colleges. In sum, our entire family owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Irvin Faust which can never be repaid.

I retired from full time teaching at GCHS some 20 years ago, and Irv was kind enough to call and congratulate me and wish me well. About ten years ago, I called him, and we had a fine conversation about education, books, teaching, and the passing of time.

I was very pleased to see that in The N. Y. Times obituary, the first thing mentioned about Irv was his career as an educator. Only afterwards, did the appropriate comments about his writing follow. I am sure that Irv would have been pleased with the order of the material. If a scroll were to be erected somewhere, I would add three attributes as follows:

HUMANITARIAN
GENTLEMAN
FRIEND
EDUCATOR
WRITER

Always in my heart. My love forever, Jean.

Dr. Irv Faust will always hold a place of reverence in our entire family.

While attending Garden City High School, my son had the privilege of being "assigned" to Dr. Faust. What a stroke of absolute luck for our entire family. During those three tumultuous years, Dr. Faust always made time for my son and me..whatever the celebration or problem. Not only was Dr. Faust a very respected guidance counselor by college admissions, on many an occasion he helped our entire family weather the negative consequences of a long past divorce. His door was always open to us.

Through the years, we have all remained in touch with both Jean and Irv Faust. On occasion I would ask Irv if he was writing anything particular. He would always down-play his talent and never mentioned all the stories and books he had already written. He was held in high acclaim by the NY literary community.

Sadly, Irv's health began to fail a few years ago. Jean remained a stalwart companion and wife to Irv. I have never witnessed such dedication.

I, my son and husband were truly blessed to have known Irv Faust. I am grateful he had Jean as a devoted spouse. Irv will always be revered in our family.

Irvin was a wonderful man, so important to my parents, James and Nancy Wechsler. Loved having the privilege of knowing him. I sent sincere condolences to Jean.
