Professor Scheffler introduced me to the rich world of the Pragmatist philosophers and I will always be in his debt. His teaching was full of warmth. My condolences to his family.

It is with great sadness that I learn of Professor Scheffler's death. At a humanities seminar for educaters, he asked me if I had considered doctoral studies. As his student, I entered an exciting world of learning that I never knew existed. Many things made him great; but one of the first things I noticed was the humility of this extraordinary man. Professional successes I have had in my life are in part due to his influence on my thinking, his guidance in encouraging me to change the course of of what I wanted to do, and his understanding of initial difficulties of being an African American graduate student at the School of Education. I owe much to him.
