Jack Sterett was born in Pendleton, Ore., July 1, 1934 to parents John and Lois Sterett. Jack passed at 85 years of age in Portland due to Natural causes June 6, 2020.
Jack had a great life! He made things Happen. In his early years hunting and fishing were part of living in the great outdoors i.e.: Pendleton, Klamath Falls, and Oakridge, Ore. Jack was fond of his youth, telling stories of bravery… and danger… Facing hungry Bears, wild bike rides without brakes, and "lifting" butter and beer from derailed freight trains high in the Cascades.
At age 18, he joined the USAF. His wife Delores was by his side while stationed in Illinois, where both sons Phil and Neil were born. When his service ended, the family moved back to the N.W. before Jack accepted a position in California with Northrop as an Electronic Technician. California was a happening place, however…Jack's next move back to Portland in 1959 became an important long-term career path.
At Tektronix he started as an Engineering Technician. Being bright and innovative brought advancement… as he rose to Engineer. Delores also worked for Tek as a Circuit Board designer. Hard work enabled them to build a beautiful home in Hillsboro, and experience joys such as water/snow skiing, and summer vacations.
Jack's interests were diverse: He liked working with Technology. However weekends were different. He loved nothing more than hunting and fishing with his Engineering friends.
Jack remarried in the early 70's to Deanna Hickox, whom he met in class while attending PSU. Deanna's interests complemented Jacks: She designed software for the BPA, and had hobbies such as Botany, Hiking and Hunting. Together they enjoyed building a new dream-house in Newberg, and shared their Joy of American Indian art and lore.
Jack completed a Masters Degree at PSU. He eventually managed large groups of Engineers, designing Graphic Display Terminals, Printers, and Portable Oscilloscopes. He was truly in his element. Beyond Tek, he also worked for several N.W. startups before finally thinking about retirement.
Jack's later years were spent enjoying the Newberg property with his wife. Working with his tractor, there was grass to cut and friends to enjoy. They both looked forward to an annual friend gathering in Eastern Oregon where they had fun making music and singing the hits.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Deanna in 2019; and his son, Neil in 2009. Jack is survived by his son, Phil (Susan); and sister, Judy Stenman (Broc).
No service will be held. Jack had a "Living" celebration of life with Deanna's passing. As they both requested, their ashes will be mixed together and spread on Mt. Hood.
