Jack Ming Wong Age 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Hercules on January 27, 2008, following a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease and a hemorrhagic stroke. He was a four-year resident of Hercules, a 13-year resident of El Sobrante, and 25-year resident of Alameda. Born in Canton, China, he left in 1949 to settle with his family in Oakland. He quickly learned English, graduated from Oakland Technical High School, participated in Cal-Berkeley ROTC and worked his way through college to achieve a B.S. in civil engineering from U.C. Berkeley in 1958. He was an engineer in the Atlas Missile Defense Systems project developed by Convair in San Diego, and later retired in 1994 after 30 years as a supervising, civil engineer for the City of Oakland Public Works Department. In retirement he was a successful financial investor, avid camper, obsessive Cal Golden Bears fan, prolific science-fiction reader, and traveled extensively through America, Asia, and Europe with his devoted family. Jack was a focused and perceptive thinker, always determined, and full of life. We loved him and will miss him dearly. Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Pearl Wong; daughter, Tami Wong of Albany; sons, James Wong, and wife, Gail of Elk Grove, and Jon Wong, of Elk Grove; mother, Sue Wong of Oakland; sisters, Marlee Young of Fremont and Judy Ong of Sunnyvale; brothers, Robert Wong of Alameda, Frank Wong of Fremont, David Wong of Manhattan Beach; and granddaughter, Lauren Wong of Elk Grove. Preceded in death by his father, Wing A. Wong in 1967. Friends and relatives are invited to attend the Service at 12 Noon, Tues, February 5 at the Mausoleum Chapel, Mountain View Cemetery, 5000 Piedmont Ave., Oakland. Interment will be at the Main Mausoleum Atrium, Mountain View Cemetery. Sunset View Mortuary Tel 510-525-5111
