James E. Corey Jr.

James E. Corey Jr., 96 died on Wednesday, April 24, 2014 at Wilson Memorial Hospital. The son of James and Anna Corey Sr. was born on February 28, 1918 in Syracuse, NY. He lived much of his life in Solvay, NY and the later years in Binghamton where he belonged to St. Francis of Assisi Church, Hillcrest. He was a past member of the Binghamton Rotary Club and was a present member of American Legion post 84 of Port Dickinson. Mr. Corey graduated from Solvay High School where he met his wife, Julia Cizenski. Jim and Julia celebrated 68 years of married life before her passing in 2010. Mr. Corey was a veteran of the US Army during WWII and part of the D-Day invasion of Normandy beach. He received the Bronze Star, the European Campaign Medal with five Bronze Arrowheads for participating in the five major European battles and obtained the rank of Captain. Mr. Corey was honorably discharged in 1946 and graduated from Syracuse University in 1949. After graduating he embarked on a 34 year career as a professional Scout Executive with Boy Scouts of America, ultimately retiring as Council Executive for the Binghamton Council. He was a life long supporter of the scouting movement, earning the rank of Eagle Scout as a youth and was awarded the title Scout Executive Emeritus, received the organizations highest level volunteer award, the Silver Beaver and was recognized by the National Organization for his status as a 75 year continuously registered member. Mr. Corey is survived by his sons, James and Deborah Corey III, Jeffrey and Anne Corey, John and Maria Corey, son-in-law, Paul Tracy; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Richard and Beverly Cizenski, as well as many nieces and nephews. Jim felt that family was of the greatest importance in life and he lavished his love and affection on them. He was predeceased in death by his beloved wife, Julia, daughter, Judy Tracy; his sisters, Jeanette O'Neil, Elizabeth Corey and his brother, Dan Corey. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 10:00 am at St. Francis of Assisi Church with full Military Honors. Interment for James and Julia will be on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 3-5 PM at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango St., Port Dickinson. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Baden Powell Council BSA, 2150 State Route 12, Binghamton, NY 13901.
