Jim Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 27, 2012.
Jim Frank Davis, 81, a native and long time resident of Florida, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2012. Jim was a well known educator in the Miami area. He was born June 29, 1930, in Victoria Hospital. He was the son of Harley Frank Davis, a prominent Coral Gables physician, and Aurora Elizabeth Recio.

Jim served as a U S Navy Medical Corpsman during the Korean War, deploying with the 1st Marine Division in 1950. He was awarded three Purple Hearts for three wounds he received while attending to his fellow Marines during battle.

Jim received his Bachelors degree in 1956 from the University of Miami and his Masters degree from Florida State University in 1965. His first teaching position was at West Miami Junior High in 1956. He was Principal in the DeKalb County, Georgia school system, from 1965 until 1968. Jim became Assistant Principal of Rockway Junior High School in Miami in 1968, and then served as Principal there from 1971 to 1988. He was the longest-serving Principal in this school history. In 1989 he became Principal of Shenandoah Junior High and served there until he retired in 1992. Jim, under Dr. Leonard Britton, was named one of the top ten Principals in Dade-County.

The ancestors of Jim Davis played important roles in the history of Florida. Lloyd Edmund Dillon, Jim's great-great-grandfather, was an early settler of Alachua County, before statehood, and is recognized as a Florida Pioneer with the Florida State Genealogical Society. His great-grandfather, Carlos Recio, came from Cuba to Key West in 1872. Carlos became a successful businessman in Key West and was a close friend of Cuban revolutionary Jose Marti, doing much to help the Cuban freedom effort during the struggle for independence from Spain. Another great-grandfather, George Washington Dillon was a US Marshall, and then Chief of Police in Key West. George later Captained the private yacht of Henry Flagler and eventually became Commodore of the Peninsular and Occidental fleet.

Since his retirement, Jim Davis divided his time between two residences on Big Torch Key and in Homestead. Jim was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and diving in the Keys. He and his wife Gerri served as volunteers for several years in the Lolo National Forest in western Montana. Jim while living in the keys was an active member of St. Mary Star of The Sea, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Alice Earl Davis and his two sisters, Consuela Sue Franklin and Aurora Marilou Denisch. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Dortin Davis, his five children, Suzy (Jim) Thompson, Cindi (Ray) Roche, Connie (Rick) Vazquez, Frank (Debra) Davis and Rod (Kelly) Davis, 19 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

Jim was a member of Sacred Heart Church.

A Memorial Service Mass will be held on Saturday March 3 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 106 Southeast 1st Drive, at 1PM Homestead, Florida 33030. 305-247-4405.

Mr. Davis was a very good leader and a supportive principal to me when I began my career at Rockway Middle School. I still remember that first day of my interview with him....when he told that, "there will be some tough days ahead but I am here to work with you and support you". Mr. Davis always gave me his support, this made a lot of difference to me as a new teacher and beyond. The teachers and students were very fortunate to have his leadership!
Thank you Mr. Davis for believing in me. Rest in Peace Mr. Davis!!

Mr. Davis was a very supportive principal when I began my teaching career at Rockway in the 80's. I still remember him previewing my first parent letter and rewarding me with written and verbal praise for my work. Don't know why I thought of him tonight and learning of his death saddened me. He was a wonderful leader and very instrumental in my personal and professional growth. I will remember him and his family in my prayers. Rest in peace, Mr. Davis. A+ job during your stay here.

I was a student at Rockway Junior High from 1981 to 1984 and Mr. Davis was my Principal. Twenty eight years later, I still think of the profound difference that he made for me. I still cherish the kind words he used when he awarded me the Principal's Award in 9th grade. Thank you Mr. Davis for believing in me, and making me see that I could achieve great things. Educators today should follow your lead!

Jim Davis was a wonderful principal. The years I spent teaching at Rockway while he was principal were incredible. Looking back, I'm amazed at how many innovative programs he nurtured and how many educational and extra-curricular activities he encouraged and supported. The faculty and students were lucky to have his leadership.

Jim Davis was my principal and friend at Rockway Junior High for many years. He made my time there enjoyable and worthwhile. He always thought of his students first and saw that they had good teachers and well supplied classrooms.

I will cherish his memory and the many good years we worked together. Happy fishing, Jim.

I am saddened of Mr. Davis' passing. I was a student at Rockway Jr. High School from 1971-1973. Mr. Davis led an incredible group of educators in what I believe may have been the best years for education in this country. My learning experience and the opportunities at Rockway were by far the best of my school years. I rememeber him and thank him. May he rest in eternal peace and may his family feel comfort in the influence, knowledge and happiness he gave to so many students and teachers. A real American role model.

I am so very sad to hear of Jim's passing. He was a very special man. He hired me at Rockway, 32 years ago and I'm still here. My life would have been totally different without him. I will always think of him fondly. My condolences to his family. I feel very fortunate to have seen him at our reunion in 2010.

It is such a painful thing to lose those whom we know and love such as you have; please know that we are keeping you close to our hearts. Nothing can take away the feelings each of you are going through right now, but God's Spirit can bring you the comfort to endure. Please do not lose sight of that understanding. The peace you need will be from Him. We keep praying for you.
