John Abel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 7, 2018.
On Thursday December 6 2018, John Abel, husband, father, brother, uncle, and beloved friend passed away at 64 years of age. John was predeceased by his father James, mother Catherine, and brother Michael. He leaves his beloved wife of 32 years, Tracy, his daughter Devon (Ian), his son Eric, his brother Stephen (Laurie), his sisters Maryanne and Suzanna (Larry) and his many nieces and nephews.

John was passionate about making the lives of everyone in his community better. He had a tremendous, quirky sense of humour, was an avid musician, and in his prime was an excellent, smooth-skating hockey player. John volunteered his time for his children and others as a coach in hockey, baseball and soccer. He continued to volunteer after his children were grown up and embraced his passion for music by playing guitar and singing at various events and charities. John entered politics eight years ago and served two terms as Deputy Mayor. His main objective – and mantra – was to improve the lives of the people of Aurora.

No words can express how much he will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Visitation will be held Thursday December 13th and Friday December 14th at the Thompson Funeral Home in Aurora from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. There will be a celebration of life on Monday December 17th at the Aurora Legion from 2-6 pm.

The Abel family (Tracy, Devon and Eric) have set up a memorial fund for donations to honour the life of their loved one John Abel.
In support of this effort, the Abel family have requested the assistance of Music Aurora (a not for profit incorporated organization) whom John was a Board member of, to gather donations on behalf of the Abel family through the Music Aurora web site. All donated funds will be deposited to an account controlled by the Abel family for future distribution to charitable causes that were supported and dear to John.
Your thoughtfulness and generosity of a donation is greatly appreciated by the Abel family.
To donate through your Online Banking Interac e-Transfer service, please send your funds to [email protected] and in the message section of the transfer use the reference John Abel Memorial Fund. This has been set for auto deposit so no password is necessary.

John was such a fabulous spirit. Always fun, always listening and genuinely interested in you, and energized to contribute. What a stellar human being! The world has lost a wonderful soul and so many hearts are heavy.
Our hearts go out to Tracy, Devon and Eric and John's wonderful siblings. Words cannot capture the grief you feel and the loss felt by so many tonight.
May the days ahead be made less heavy by the multitude of fantastic memories and heart warming testimonials of a life well lived.
Much love from the Rutherford's

Our heartfelt condolences to Eric, Devon and Tracey. John was an inspiring neighbour and friend. His generosity, his willingness to give to community was evident long before he became a politician. May your many memories comfort you all during this most difficult time.
