John Joseph Barry, 76, of 764 N. Church Street, Spartanburg, South Carolina, died unexpectedly in his home on January 29, 2004.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts on July 11, 1927, he was the son of the late John and Mary Nolan Barry. He was the former husband of Mary Bradley Barry of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.

Mr. Barry served as a Medical Technician during World War II for the US Army. He was the recipient of the Army of Occupation Medal, Japan and the World War II Victory Medal. He remained an active member of the VFW Post #9539 in Spartanburg.

Mr. Barry attended the Boston Trade School and held a private pilot’s license. He was a participant in the VA Framingham Heart Study. Mr. Barry was a retired long-distance commercial truck driver and a member of the Teamsters’ Union Local #42.

Mr. Barry is survived by his six children, Dianne M. Barry of Norwood, Elizabeth A. Barry of West Roxbury, Joan L. Barry of Weston, Joyce E. Barry of Centerville, Ralph B. Barry of West Roxbury and David P. Barry of Norwood. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and one sister, Louise Barry Coviello of Somerville. His survivors reside in Massachusetts.

Mr. Barry was predeceased by his brother, James E. Barry of Massachusetts.

Private services will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the VFW Post #9539, PO Box 5083, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
