John Lefebvre Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 5 to Dec. 10, 2022.
John Edward Lefebvre, Retired Lieutenant Commander, age 63, of Norfolk, VA passed away peacefully on November 27, 2022 with his family by his side after a hard-fought 2 1/2 year battle with pancreatic cancer.

John, often referred to as Lefty, was born on January 24, 1959 in Springfield, MA, the fifth and youngest child of Armand and Jean (Varney) Lefebvre. He was predeceased by both parents and step-father George Bergeron.

John grew up in Claremont, NH with a strong influence from his Uncle Leo and Franklin, NH cousins. From a very young age he was into fishing, skiing, and boating. His love of fishing and water would stay with him throughout his life. He graduated from Stevens Highschool, Class of 1977, and enlisted in the Navy in 1978 as an electrician. Following graduation from training, he was assigned to his first ship, the USS Howard Gilmore which would take him on his first assignment to Sardinia, Italy. As a Mustang officer, he went on to have an esteemed 24 year career in the Navy, proudly serving on 5 additional ships, becoming the Chief Engineer of the USS Bridge (AOE-10), and also serving during the Persian Gulf War. He received two Navy Commendation Medals, a Combat Action Ribbon, as well as numerous other awards during his tenure. John became an instructor for the United States Naval Academy before retiring in 2001 as a Lieutenant Commander. Following retirement, John knew he was a man on the move and spent the next 20 years traveling the world as one of the best engineers and seaman that private sector money could buy. He worked for Military Sealift Command, Maersk, and Life Cycle Engineering, eventually completely retiring this past summer of 2022. He spent his last summer enjoying what he loved most, fishing and family.

John is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Michele Lefebvre; his daughter's family, Meagan and Jason Krueger of Wisconsin; his son's family, Colin Lefebvre and J'Lee Hanson of Wisconsin; his son's family, Brandon Steigerwalt and Joyce Corpin of Virginia; his first wife, Donna Schoeckert of Florida, and his four siblings and their families: Linda and Tim Buzzell and their children, Jason and Adam Rice and Gretchen Adams and Sarah Frazee; Pamela Lefebvre-Parkinson and her daughter Sara Gibbons; Paul and Joan Lefebvre and their children, Benjamin Lefebvre and Mallory Gendron; Susan and Michael Monetta and their children, Michael and Nicholas Monetta. John is also survived by three granddaughters and one grandson; Avery and Emma Krueger, Lucia and soon to be Leopold Lefebvre (Due 3/2023) and several great nieces and nephews with special affection for the four Bear Island girls, Logan and Emily Lefebvre, Hattie and Nora Gendron.

John was many things to many different people; a husband, father, grandpa, brother, fun uncle, loyal friend, best coworker and mentor to name a few. One thing for certain, he was always strong and independent. He took care of everyone around him and always made sure you had a seat at the table. John shared his one-of-a-kind humor, his good story telling, and a big smile with everyone he met. He loved adventure, fishing, camping, bonfires, family and his pets Rogie, Boston, and Lilly. He traveled all over the world but his two favorite destinations were home and Bear Island, NH where he spent quality time with family and friends. Some of the best nights ever spent together were on his back deck or around the dining room table at Bear Island. He always brought so much life and light to the conversation. He will always be remembered and a part of our stories forever.

In lieu of a traditional memorial service, John has requested to "have a big party" which will take place in Norfolk, VA in late January and on Bear Island, Meredith, NH in July 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the local Norfolk Humane Society, which will support the rescue and homing of pets in need of families.

I grew up with John in Claremont, NH. We were much closer in youth than as adults only because we had gone our separate ways being men and captains of our own ships, but I have never forgotten John. Never. I will always remember his intelligence mixed with a constant heart. Had I known time was so short for you I would have steered my ship in your direction. This is Ross and I will miss you my friend. See you on the other side.

John was a great friend and co-worker. One of my many memories of his was his many desserts he baked during our ship's availabilities. He baked me a pineapple upside down cake. He is missed

Though we were apart most of our adult lives other than reunions, etc., I will always remember our days as children at Gram and Gramps house in Franklin. The old tractor and the pictures of all us cousins on my dads truck and the cook-outs with family we all enjoyed. Rest In Peace my cousin!! You will be missed!

Always, your cousin Joe Lefebvre

Lefty was a shipmate when we taught together at the U.S. Naval Academy in the early '80s. He was a great person to work with, and I still have and use his recipe for Salmon Pie. Prayers and condolences to his entire family. Rest easy, Lefty, we have the watch.

Although Lefty and I parted ways over the years, memories often, very often came to mind that made me, or members of my family- smile. We commissioned BRIDGE together. He made engineering miracles happen, and guided many officers & crew to find the best course during many storms. Lefty is- and was perhaps, the most unique, caring, and sincere shipmate a Friend, Sailor, or lost soul could have. With all my hopes, if heaven indeed exists- Lefty finds his way to my twin boys who we lost in 95. They will welcome him with hearty smiles- holding his beer especially brewed with laughter and stories- gold in color and true in Faith. I love you LCDR Lefebvre...and I will see you soon enough. With Great Respect- Wade M Stephens, LCDR, LDO Admin, Retired- Charleston WV.

John and I were neighbors, growing up in the Bluff Neighborhood in Claremont NH. Many a day or early evening wouldn't go by without a game of hide & seek, Red Rover, Red Light Green Light and when older, Spin the Bottle . Forts were built, tree houses and go carts. Waffle baseball played at The Barden's house and up in the sandpit on Memorial Dr. Polywog and turtle hunting in the swamp.
His family shopped in our store, Don's Market, After high school, I kept tack of my friend through his Mom and sister Susan. We reconnected on Facebook. I love Facebook for this reason My son graduated from the Naval Academy, and is a Lt. Cmdr stationed at Norfolk. We got to share some great stories
Rest easy and in peace my old friend.... We all have the watch

My thoughts are with the whole family at this time of sadness. Lefty and Donna were friends and neighbors when we all lived in base housing in Annapolis MD. I had the pleasure of babysitting Megan when she was just a toddler. Lefty was a great guy and surely will be missed by all.

You might say, Lefty was my cousin-in-law. He was the brother of a brother and sister married to my brother and sister cousins. (Please, don´t make me explain it again!)
I had the pleasure of meeting Lefty and his first wife, Donna, during his stint at the Naval Academy. I was new in town, too. Since we were sort of "family" we spent time together playing golf, sailing my Hobie Cat catamaran on the Bay and relaxing with his growing family. It was only a couple years, but Lefty was a great guy to pal around with. Even came up to Claremont and fished Lake Sunapee with him. I send best wishes and condolences to my cousins (Mike and Joni) and their spouses (Sue and Paul).

Sending our sincere sympathies to all the family of my cousin John Lefebvre. My father Leo, loved John like a son and John loved my dad right back. I understand the loss and we will all miss John and his lively humor and loving heart. I know his family and all that had the pleasure to know him will keep his memory alive by continuing the stories and sharing the laughs that he would want us all to share! God bless and Rest Peacefully with your Heavenly family.
