Dr. Joseph A.
Emeritus Professor and former Chairman of Romance Languages of East Carolina University, died in Playa de Aro, Spain, on July 12, 2002. Although born in Richmond, Virginia, he grew up in Pittsburgh, where he attended Miller, McKelvy and Letsche schools and graduated from Fifth Avenue High School in 1939. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he studied at the Universities of Pennsylvania, Toulouse (France) and Madrid (Spain), and taught Romance Languages at the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University and East Carolina University, from which he retired in 1986. He had numerous publications in Spanish phonetics and dialectology. Dr. Fernandez was a member of the American Association of Teachers of French, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, The American Dialect Society, and Phi Sigma Iota, Romance Language Honor Society. He is survived by his widow, Esther Moro de Fernandez.
