Julie Thompson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 13, 2017.
Julie Ann Thompson passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 13th, 2017 at Inova Fairfax Hospital surrounded by her family and loved ones. Julie was a loving wife, mother, and a great friend to many people. She was a great listener and counselor who always put the needs of others before her own. Julie is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Richard Thompson, and her three children: Joseph Thompson and his wife Emily, Meghan Edwards and her husband Daniel, and Kathleen Thompson. Born April 21st, 1957 in Rock Island, Illinois, Julie was the daughter of the late Ralph and Kathleen (Lamp) Cockerill. Julie attended Bradley University where she obtained a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering. Upon graduation she moved to Dallas, TX where she met her husband and the love of her life, Rich. Julie and Rich married in 1983 and lived in Chicago, IL, San Francisco, CA, Sacramento, CA, and West Hartford, CT before settling in Centreville, VA in 1994. Julie was a devoted mother. She was an active participant in her children's many school and extra-curricular activities. She served for many years as a Girl Scout troop leader and supported her daughter Meghan's competitive swimming by driving her to swim practice at 4 AM multiple times a week to help her towards becoming an eventual NCAA swimmer. Julie also served the community by teaching ESL and volunteering at the WFCM food pantry. Her hobbies included reading, walking, hiking, yoga and cooking. Julie was a humble servant of Christ and the church community. She was an active member of Centreville United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and adult bible study classes, served on church leadership councils and participated in church sponsored missions such as Grace Ministries, the Tea ministry and Helping Haitian Angels (including a mission trip to Haiti in October 2016). Julie also participated in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) International where she served as a group leader. Julie is survived by her brother John Cockerill and his wife Karen; her sister Jan Franks and her husband John; her father-in-law Fred Thompson; her brother-in-law Scott Thompson and his wife Terri; and her sister-in-law Carol Pepper and her husband Dave. Julie was also the loving aunt to many nieces and nephews: Andy and Caleb Cockerill, Josh and Jennie Franks, Matt Smith, Jack Thompson, and Emily, Eric, and Zach Pepper. Julie was preceded in death by her brother Jim Cockerill (survived by wife Merry), mother-in law Joanne Thompson and sister-in-law Marjorie Hardee (survived by husband Alton Hardee). A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 20, at 2 PM at the Centreville United Methodist Church located at 6400 Old Centreville Road, Centreville, VA 20121. Following the service there will be a visitation from 3-5 PM where guests may pay their respects. Light refreshments will be provided at the visitation. A private burial ceremony in the coming weeks will place Julie's remains to rest in State College, PA, a place near and dear to her in life. Memorial contributions are welcome and may be made to the Centreville United Methodist Church or the Western Fairfax Christian Ministries Food Pantry.

I was truly saddened when I saw of Julie's passing in the latest edition of Hilltopics. I was also saddened to find that James had passed a year earlier. My heartfelt condolences go out to Jan and John as well as to Julie's entire family. I was a neighbor of the Cockerill's in Rock Island when we were all growing up but lost touch after school, careers and families took over. I am sure she will be missed and my very sincerest condolences to Jan and John

I was saddened to read the latest Bradley Hilltopics and hear about Julie. We were fellow IE majors and roommates and lost touch as the years passed. I found her on Facebook earlier this year and noticed she was living a very full life. A very loving and thoughtful obituary. Wishing her Godspeed!

I just learned of this very tragic news today from my daughter who played with Kathy since the age of 3. We were neighbors for 20+ years and she was a wonderful woman who will be missed by many I am sure. Her dedication to Girl Scouts, many church activities and helping my daughter thru a very difficult time will always be appreciated by me. My very sincerest condolences to Rich, Joey, Meghan and Kathy.

What a loss for her family and the church community which she served. I got to know Julie this year as my BSF leader and really enjoyed my one-on-one chats with her. She was always encouraging, empathetic and REAL! She always wanted everyone to be included and went out of her way to make people feel wanted. I'm terribly sorry for her family's loss. She is missed...

We've just heard of Julie's passing and want to express our sincere condolences to the family. Although we've been gone for ten years, our memories of the families and volunteers to the neighborhood activities remain dear to us. The families of Gate Post Estates were its richest resource, and they were always close and supportive of each other in times such as these. Our prayers are with the family and all those who grieve her passing.

I was in an evening covenant group that Julie led at Centreville United Methodist years ago. She was such a beautiful caring spirit and the light of Christ truly shown through her and guided her in her words and actions. She always prayed for & asked about my sick daughter, who is the same age as her youngest. I also had the privilege to be in her Advent study years later. Memories of her put a smile in my heart --- truly she is a treasure and I can't even begin to imagine your suffering and sense of loss. I continue to pray for you and hold your family close in my heart.

I can't express enough my sorrow at this time. Julie and I were fortunate to be in band all throughout grade school and high school. We were practically neighbors as we grew up in the same block. My sincerest sympathies to her brother John and sister Jan.

We were very shocked and saddened to hear of Julie's passing. Although we moved from the neighborhood several years ago we always remembered the Thompsons as being wonderful neighbors. Julie was always so sweet and obviously a wonderful mother and wife. There will be a big hole left not only in the lives and hearts of her lovely family but also in the community that she served. Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole Thompson family for their comfort and strength. Tom & Pat Garber (former Gate Post residents)

I was a roommate of Julie's in college and recently found her on Facebook. We messaged each other about our lives since college and I had hoped to one day find a time to visit her. She proudly told me about her family. My husband (also a friend of Julie's in college) are shocked and so sad to hear of her passing. It sounds like she had a great life and will continue to look out for all of you from heaven. Our condolences to her family and friends. Suzy and Doug Patton

My heart is broken to say goodbye to my neighbor and friend of 23 years. I will miss her greatly at our next Bunco gathering or girls weekend at the beach. I will miss seeing her on walks or calling her for a fun catch up phone call to share thoughts on faith, family, hopes and worries. She lived a life of service. Now in the arms of the Lord she served, may she be granted eternal rest. Love you, Julie.

I have so many memories of time spent with Julie. Probably the most poignant is that we tried to celebrate our April birthdays on a day in between ours, since they are just 4 days apart. We'd catch up at lunch and then enjoy an activity together, even if it was just running errands. When I lived in Florida we made a date to talk and catch up. Maybe the best was last year, when I surprised her with a visit on her birthday. I flew in two days earlier, and it was so hard not to tell her I was in town. She was outside talking to her neighbor and watched me pull in but not recognizing the car, she said, "...that looks like Barbara but can't be..." That was so much fun. Julie was also known for her fabulous cooking and baking. Though she had probably thousands of recipes in her head, she was always searching for new ones. She would describe a dessert by saying, "Oh it was easy! You just..." and then explain the elaborate process. Her masterpiece, though, was the wedding cake she made for Meghan's wedding because it was created with such love and joy.

As the mother-in-law of Julie's daughter, Meghan, Julie welcomed me, from the beginning, as part of her extended family. "Welcome to the family!" she wrote, in a note I've save still, long after the wedding. Although I was just getting to know her, I admire her commitment and devotion to her family and her sense of responsibility to her community and to those less fortunate. Julie and I shared our excitement and hope for the union of my son, Daniel and her daughter, Meghan, and at our last conversation, just a little over a month ago, we allowed ourselves to reflect on milestones yet to come, there are no words for how deeply felt her loss is.
