Lavinia Wilbur Obituary

Groton - Lavinia Wilbur, 89, lifelong resident of Noank, wife of the late Richard C. Wilbur, passed away at home Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014.

Lavinia was born in Noank, to Raymond and Esther (Rathbun) Coon, on July 24, 1925. She was a graduate of Fitch High School, Class of 1943.

She married Richard Wilbur of Noank, on July 24, 1948.

She worked at several jobs; a teller at the Hartford National Bank in Mystic, a bookkeeper for her father's gas station and garage in Noank, and a clerk/bookkeeper at Woolworth's in Groton.

Lavinia was a 50-year member of the Noank Baptist Church. She belonged to the church's Evening Circle, and for many years she volunteered her time working at the group's Corner Closet Thrift Shop in Noank.

Her two children, Raymond Wilbur and Barbara A. Shiffer, and a grandson, Ted Shiffer, all of Noank, and several nieces and nephews, survive her.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2006, and a brother, Raymond Coon Jr. in 1944.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Mystic Healthcare and Rehab and Lighthouse Home Care who cared for her during her recent convalescence.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, at the Noank Baptist Church. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Noank Baptist Church, 18 Cathedral Heights, Noank, CT 06340.
