Lawrence A. Stone M.D. 1946 - 2011 Lawrence A. Stone, M.D., age 65, a widely- respected medical oncologist in Chicago and the north suburbs for nearly 40 years, died suddenly December 5 in Lansing, MI, where he had recently joined a new medical practice. Dr. Stone was born in Boise on June 28, 1946, the son of Joel and Sylvia Stone. Along with his twin brother, David, he grew up in Caldwell and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1964. He attended Indiana University, where he received a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1968 and was president of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. He received his doctor of medicine degree from Northwestern University Medical School in 1972, where he was selected as his class' student commencement speaker. Following an internal medicine residency at Northwestern University McGaw Medical Center, he completed a fellowship in Developmental Therapeutics at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, and returned to Chicago for a fellowship in Medical Oncology at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center. A cancer specialist in private practice since 1977, he was an attending physician for more than 25 years at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he served as president of the medical staff and in numerous other leadership roles. He was also on the medical staffs of Rush North Shore Medical Center, Holy Family Hospital, Highland Park Hospital, Advocate Health Centers, Christ Hospital Medical Center, and Trinity Hospital. Among various honors, Dr. Stone was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago and was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Academic appointments included clinical assistant professor of medicine in medical oncology at University of Illinois School of Medicine-Chicago; at University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine; and since June at Ingham Regional Medical Center and Sparrow Health System through Michigan State University. Dr. Stone also had served on the Chicago Board of Health Advisory Panel on HMOs. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Brenda Fox Stone, a son Jason Kenneth Stone, daughters Marnie Kate and Karen Renee Stone, all of Northbrook; and his twin brother David N. Stone and sister-in-law Marcia Cooper Stone of Seattle, WA. Memorial contributions may be made to the Birthright Israel Foundation, P.O. Dear Brenda, I am so terribly sorry to hear about Larry. He was a wonderful fellow, and I can only imagine how bereft you must feel. I am in California now and very seldom back in the Midwest -- but I would love to get back in touch if you find yourself in LA at some point.
