Louise was my favorite professor ever! She was amazing. She would let me eat with her in the faculty cafeteria. She would close her door if students had serious topics to discuss; she was a GREAT listener! She taught D.H.Lawrence so beautifully, and I have taught him too. She taught me fiction and non-fiction writing. So much of who she was as a scholar and teacher have informed my own life. Bless you, Ernie, Justin, and Jason, and your families.

Louise was a patient here for several years. She has loved by my whole office including staff and patients lucky enough to know her. There was always a smile on her face and her humility was such that no one knew how well known she was.
We will miss her.

She was a great teacher, a source of encouragement and a mentor. She nurtured me as a writer and later as a teacher. She will be missed and forgotten.. Praying for her family!

Joan Stillman praised Louise DeSalvo's teaching at Hunter enthusiastically. This impressed me
thus I read her book about VW. Glad to learn of Douglass college education.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I am one of those Wood-Ridge High School students who really benefited from "Mrs. DeSalvo's" excellent teaching and mentoring. I still remember her and immediately recognized her picture in the Times. I was so happy to read about her distinguished career and family. Remember those wonderful times.

Dear Dr DeSalvo and sons, I was so saddened to hear of your wife's death. I was your neighbor and babysitter when you lived on Columbus Avenue. I am so impressed with all your wife's accomplishments and wish we had kept in touch. I remember her fondly and as a very sweet woman. I love the photo you posted of her and she hasn't changed over the years. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope your memories will help you with your grief. My deepest sympathy, Betty Ann

This morning I found out that my first writing teacher Louise DeSalvo has passed away. Because of Louise, I discovered memoir writing. I took five of her courses while at Hunter College, and she changed the course of my life. I am so grateful to her. I admired how she lived and wrote with fierceness and grace. For the last twenty years, she kept in touch with me, always writing me back letters and emails, when I'm sure she had plenty of other things to do and students to keep in touch with. She always encouraged me to continue work on my manuscript about my mom, which has taken years longer than I expected. Louise believed that writing our stories could help us heal ourselves and others, and it's something I continue to teach my own students. I will miss her. She made such an impact on me.
