Margaret Hutchinson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 5 to Feb. 6, 2014.

THOMASTON - Mrs. Gladys Margaret Wallis Hutchinson died on January 23, 2014. Claiming the promise of John 14:2-3, she left the pain and suffering of this earth for the place Jesus had prepared for her in heaven, our Father's house.

She was born July 26, 1926, in Deland, Florida, the only daughter and firstborn of five children of John and Gladys Moore Wallis. When she was very young, her family moved back to Elberton, Ga., where she spent the remainder of her childhood. Her four brothers—John, Thomas, George (Butch), and Jimmy—joined the family over the course of the next 22 years.

After graduating from Georgia State College for Women (GSCW) in Milledgeville, Ga., with a degree in home economics, Margaret taught school in Evans, Ga., for one year and then moved to Thomaston, Ga., to teach at R.E. Lee Institute. She met Ray Hutchinson at a singles' fellowship sponsored by First Baptist Church, and they married on March 18, 1951. Three children were born: Ellen, Ann, and Dan. Her husband Ray and two of her brothers, John and George (Butch) Wallis, preceded her in death.

Surviving are daughters Ellen Hutchinson (Ron) Grooms of Aiken, S.C., and Ann Hutchinson (Bud) Williamson of Stone Mountain, Ga.; son Dan Hutchinson of Alpharetta, Ga.; and brothers Thomas (Patricia) Wallis and Jimmy (Rochelle) Wallis, both of Elberton, Ga. Her grandchildren are Bill (Beth) Williamson of Bonner, ACT, Australia; Pamela Grooms (Brandon) Dierker of Charlotte, N.C.; Jeremy (Charlotte) Williamson of Chamblee, Ga.; Thomas (Ashley) Grooms of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Laura Williamson (Robert) Stafford of Lilburn, Ga.; and Daniel Hutchinson of Alpharetta, Ga. Eight great-grandchildren also survive.

Besides teaching at R.E. Lee for several years, Margaret Hutchinson taught nutrition as part of the LPN program at the Upson County Area Vocational Center and worked as a substitute teacher at many Upson County schools. She did her best to pass down her home economics skills to her children and grandchildren. She was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she served in various capacities through the years in the children's ministry and for many years as the church librarian.

A private family graveside memorial service was held on January 25, 2014, at Southview Cemetery in Thomaston. A celebration of life picnic is being planned for the spring at Stone Mountain Park, where she enjoyed spending time with family.

Donations may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, 410 S. Church St., Thomaston, GA 30286.
