Mary Barnes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 14, 2008.
BARNES MARY HOWCOTT BARNES December 19, 1910 - May 4, 2008 Mary Butler Howcott was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. When she was a young teenager both of her parents died, after which time she and her older brother were cared for by their Aunt Mary. While attending Sophie Newcomb College Mary met her future husband, a handsome, dashing young dental student from Tulane University. Soon after Mary and Preston were married Preston joined the United States Army, where he proudly served in the Dental Corps. As an Army family, Mary and Preston and their two sons, Preston III and Harley, traveled extensively and were stationed in many different places, including Panama, Hawaii and San Francisco. Wherever the Barnes family moved they developed lifelong friendships. Mary delighted in entertaining her family and friends, and did so with exquisite taste. It was a joy for her to welcome people into her home, and her warmth and grace made each guest feel special. When Preston retired from the Army in 1962 he and Mary moved to Phoenix. Life in Phoenix was busy and happy, filled with children and grandchildren and with delightful times shared with their large circle of Phoenix friends. After Preston's death in 1981 Mary's life continued to be full. Along with treasured time spent with those she loved, she remained actively involved in The Junior League, and in the Valley Officers' Wives Club. She was a lifelong member of these organizations and generously donated her time and talents to each of them. She always looked forward to summers spent in Carmel, California, where she could escape the desert heat, returning to Phoenix each fall when the weather turned cool once again. Mary is survived by her sons, Preston and his wife Edean, Harley and his wife Sandra, her five grandchildren: Preston IV, Thomas and his wife Joni, Kenneth and his wife Ryoko, Harley Jr. and Remy, and her two great grandchildren, Logan and Jack. Also, she is survived by many relatives in New Orleans, including her nephew, Harley Howcott. Private family services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, where Mary will be laid to rest with her beloved husband. We have received tremendous kindness and support from friends during this sad time, for which we are deeply grateful. We are thankful for the loving care given to Mary by two special ladies, Mozelle Green and Sadie Baczynski. For anyone who wishes to do so, the family suggests a donation in Mary's memory to a favorite charity. Mary took great pleasure in living every one of her 97 years, viewing each new day as a present to be opened and enjoyed. She refused to be intimidated or defeated by life's adversities, and always focused on what was good and positive. The example she set for her family was one of strength and indomitable spirit, and of making the most of the lives we are given. You will be in our hearts forever, Mom and Grams. The beauty and joy you embodied will continue to be a treasured beacon to each one of us.

Mary truly was a beautiful person. I became friends with her when I worked for her accountant. After I left that company, Mary chose to remain my friend, and I feel blessed for that.
