I'm writing to send my condolences to Dr. Sommerville and his children. I read Mrs.
Somerville's passing exactly three months
ago in The Blade's obituary. She was my
7th grade math teacher at Old West End Jr.
High during the 1982-83 school year. I was
13, now I'm 44. She taught my older siblings, Lisa and Chris at both Glenwood
Elementary and Old West End in the '70s.
Also, her son Barry was a good substitute
teacher. I apologize for signing late.
May she rest in peace.

I will miss Mattie a lot. She was always cheerful and in a good mood, no matter what was going on. JC would call to check on me. We would talk a couple of minutes, and he he would give the phone to Mattie. Mattie and I would talk at least 30 minutes to an hour. She was funny and always made me laugh. When I came to vist her and JC, I was at home. I didn't want to leave. I'm praying and asking God to comfort the family. Love you cousin Mattie.

May God wrap his arms around the Sommerville family during this difficult time. Mrs. Sommerville was one of my teachers at Old West End. She and Mrs. J. Scott were my favorite educators and both made a profound impact on my life. I am saddened by her loss, but I know she is with God.

One of my favorite teachers whom I've always thought of throughout the years. She was loving, caring and had a wonderful sense of humor. I'm blessed to have spoken with her many years later as an adult to let her know how special she was to me. She will be deeply missed.

My prayers go out to the Sommerville family. Mrs. Sommerville was my math teacher at Old West End. I loved going to Math class! Two things were guaranteed, we were going to learn and we were going to laugh! At the age of 48, I don't remember clearly of my Middle School days. However, Mrs. Sommerville's voice, and her stance against foolishness in her class are very clear! I'm a better person because of what she deposited into her students.
