Michael Addonigio (Cummings) Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 15, 2025.
Michael Joseph Addonigio (Cummings), age 75, passed away on May 11, 2025, in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Michael was raised in Revere and East Boston. He was the beloved son of Marion Cummings (née Addonigio) and the late Cameron Eugene Cummings. He was preceded in death by his brothers Eugene (Gino) Cummings and Joseph Cummings. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Kimberly Overton, and cherished grandson, Anthony "Ken" Cummings, as well as his mother Marion, his sisters Karen Cummings, Deborah Hathaway, Susan Cummings, and brother William Cummings. Michael also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, and his former spouse Sharon Cummings, with whom he shared 51 years and an unbreakable bond.

Michael was a welder by trade, but music was always the beat of his heart. A passionate singer-songwriter, and guitarist, he began performing country music at the age of 18 and quickly became a beloved entertainer throughout the New England area. His talent as both a performer and songwriter earned him a spot in the John Penny Blue Star Jamboree in 1979, where he was recognized as one of the favorite entertainers to grace the stage.

In 1985, Michael formed his own band, The City Limits Band, performing successfully across the Northeast. He became one of the most sought-after entertainers in the region-working six and sometimes seven nights a week-yet always found joy in the Sunday afternoon benefits, which held a special place in his heart.

In 1989, Michael took a leap of faith and moved to Music City, USA-Nashville, Tennessee-to further pursue his musical dreams. It was there he met and partnered with the late Barrett King, forming not only a creative partnership but a deep and lasting friendship. The two would go on to write and record countless songs together, spending long nights at Shoney's, jotting down lyrics and chasing melodies over endless cups of coffee. Michael always spoke fondly of those memories, cherishing the bond he shared with Barrett. Even after Barrett's passing, Michael kept his spirit alive-often reflecting on their friendship with affection, gratitude, and a quiet reverence.

Michael's music was a reflection of his spirit-gritty, passionate, and deeply human. He gave 100% of himself to every performance, singing his way into the hearts and minds of many. Though he never achieved the widespread recognition he deserved, his dream never faded, and his voice never stopped reaching those who needed to hear it.

His family finds peace knowing that his music lives on-and that his story, his spirit, and his songs continue to echo in those who loved him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible team at Gentiva Hospice in Hendersonville, whose compassionate care and unwavering support during Michael's final days meant more than words can express.

My deepest condolences to all who knew and loved Mike. I had the honor of sharing 50+ years of life and stage with Mike, from the early days of Boston Country to just a quick nod about 3 weeks ago. Mike as always the true friend gave me the opportunity, and honor to demo 3 of his songs in my studio here in the Philippines where I live now. RIP Mike, Jesus has you now, love ya brother!
