NORMAN KUHNS Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Feb. 25, 2014.
KUHNS, NORMAN ALBERT
April 4, 1944 – February 17, 2014
On February 17, 2014, just a few short weeks before his 70th birthday, Norm passed away suddenly into the arms of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Norm was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Eva Kuhns, his sister Mary Fuchs, and his brothers John and David. Norm always wanted to help people. Teaching became the vehicle. He began his career as a middle-years teacher, teaching at the grades 6-8 levels. After spending a few years there, he moved into the secondary system where he taught mathematics (grades 9-12) for a number of years before attending graduate school to become a professional counselor. Following graduate school Norm earned his doctorate from the University of Arizona. His teaching career continued at the University of Regina, where he spent many years in the elementary and middle-years programs teaching courses in educational psychology, as well as helping to develop a module in human relations that became an integral part of classroom experiences. During that period he also became associate director of Counseling Services and shared his time between there and the Faculty of Education. He later returned to the Faculty of Education on a full-time basis, teaching counseling courses to graduate students, as well as a developmental psychology course in the middle-years program. Norm supervised many masters' students and undergraduate pre-interns and interns; sat on numerous university-wide committees; and gave many workshops and presentations to teachers, community groups and media that dealt with parenting issues and child-adolescent development. He made many friends among colleagues and students and the community at large. At his retirement from the University of Regina in 2010, Norm was associate professor of Education. Another of Norm's talents that blessed our community was his expertise in building houses. In the 1980s he owned and operated Miracle Homes, through which he custom-built many beautiful houses in Regina and area, earning him the appropriate handle "Miracle Norm" and the respect of those in the trades. Norm travelled twice to Israel, spending most of his time in Jerusalem. He said it always felt like he was going home. After he retired, he worked in his beautiful backyard, took long walks in the neighbourhood, and spent precious time with his family and pets. Norm will be forever and lovingly missed by his wife Diane, son Jeff (Carol Kudeba and her children, Ryan and Whitney), daughter Stephanie Abramson (Nathan), grandson Caleb, whom he loved with all his heart, his sister Linda Rodriguez (Rubicel), sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews, all who loved him dearly. At Norm's request, a private graveside ceremony was held at Riverside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harvest City Christian Academy, 2202 8th Avenue, Regina SK S4R 7T9.

Tonight, I have just learned about Norm's passing. I feel totally shocked and deeply saddened by this news. Norm was my professor for several years and practicum supervisor during my grad studies at the U of R. I'll never forget him modelling a counselling session during one of our classes. It was supposed to be a short exercise, and not very serious. Instead, we all sat there stunned by his amazing display of counselling skills. We didn't want the exercise to ever end. I wish I had e-mailed him one last time. I hope he knew how thankful I've always felt for his positive example in the field of education, for all the times he served as my reference for jobs, and for being a huge reason why I received my M. Ed. He also encouraged me in my faith, and I deeply admired his relationship with the Lord. I will always hold him in such positive regard. I cannot fully put it into words. As I type this, I am already saying prayers for his family. I'm so very sorry.

I was saddened to hear of Norm's passing. I remember him as a kind humble and thoughtful man, who touched so positively those he taught, counselled and worked with. He worked with my husband Peter for many years in the faculty of education. Peter counted him as a friend and respected him as a colleague. My prayers and thoughts are with his family at this most difficult time. From Natalie Hemingway and family
