Peter Wilfong Whitener, Jr., age 68 of Newton, passed away Friday, September 26, 2014 at his residence.

Born June 13, 1946, he was the son of the late Peter Wilfong Whitener, Sr., and Mildred Cansler Whitener and was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

Pete served in the U.S. Air Force and was active in his church as well as the Conover Lion's Club. He was employed at Bank of Granite for many years before retiring in 2009. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed genealogy and studying his family history.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 33 years, Phyllis Deitz Whitener; son, Daniel Whitener and wife, Jennifer; daughter, Heather Klavuhn and husband, Tory; sister, Janice Houser and husband, Jerry; grandchildren, Braden Klavuhn and Henry Whitener; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at Salem Lutheran Church in Lincolnton, with Dr. David Keck officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, September 29, 2014 at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton, NC.

Memorials may be made to Sipe's Orchard Home, Inc., 4431 County Home Rd., Conover, NC 28613, or Salem Lutheran Church 3410 Startown Rd., Lincolnton, NC 28092, or Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658.

I just found out about Pete's passing and I am so sorry for your loss. I served with Pete in the Air Force in Abilene, TX from 1968 to when he got out in 1970. He was my supervisor but also a good friend. I give Pete credit for instilling in me attention to detail and taking pride in the job we do. He always treated everyone respectfully and had a great sense of humor. Pete has made a lasting impression on my life. I am glad to see that Pete had a fulfilling life with his family and his church. I wish your family well and share in your grief.

Phyllis and family. I've alway felt lucky to have grown up in the Cansler family. I don't know that I have any memory of the brothers and sisters being anything but close. Considering the cousins are all over the place, we still tend to get together as much as we can. Pete was a vital part of that link. He was the sweetest, most even tempered person I knew. He will be missed. He's in Gods hands and good company...the uncles, and parents who have gone before him. May you find peace in your memories.

I knew Pete through the Bank of Granite and Sipes Orchard Home for over12 years. His kindness and gentleness resonated not only to me but to everyone he came in contact with. He was a true Man of God who lived his faith throughout his life. It was an honor knowing you Pete. You will surely be missed.

We only met Pete a few years ago. He was one of those special people that when you met him you felt like you had known him forever. God definitely called one of the “Good Ones” home to be with Him. Our sincere condolences are with Phyllis and all of Pete's family.
