My sincere condolences to Eleanor and David. We have never met but we all know Phil. I had but a couple of years socializing with Phil as we shared both Beloit and Notre Dame connections (I was a St. Mary's girl.) He was fun in spirit and Faith. His family has deep roots in Beloit. I grew up attending St.Peter's in South Beloit and wondered in my youth about the stained glass window titled Amend. Were they going to change it? Phil enlightened me! I will think of Phil as I watch the upcoming ND/Purdue game. Which is why I searched for him. I am so sad that he is gone.

April 11, 2012

Found out about Phil through the Spring edition of the NOTRE DAME MAGAZINE. Phil and I were classmates at UND and were close as the EE class consisted of about 25 students. Phil will always be remembered as a friend and man who honored the ND traditions and values.

Phil was my boss, friend and mentor at Britton-Lee in Santa Clara during the 1980's. I have only fond memories of him and Eleanor. Phil was a generous and kind soul who made a difference in my life. We shared many long conversations. Fortunately, I was able to express my love to him recently. Eleanor, you and Phil are in my heart.

Dear Aunty El and Dan,

It grieves me that I can't be with you today an share in the remembrance of uncle Phil. It frustrates me that I am only a five hour drive away today, and am physically closer than I have ever been. But if uncle Phil taught me anything, it was to realize that there is more than one way to look at things. I learned that lesson in Thunder Bay, at Birch Beach. When uncle Phil took me aside and taught me to recite the alphabet in reverse. That day he helped me understand that there is always another way, or a different view. And in that I am happy to remember him this way, and to send my love to you. Although I can't be with you today you are in m thoughts, and I know that the man may be gone, but his examples and stories will live on amongst our friends and families.
I lobe you all, and miss you uncle Phil.

Dear Eleanor and Dan-
What a wonderful tribute to Phil on the website. We will always remember that smile--for it was part of him. Indeed, I cannot ever recall seeing Phil when he wasn't smiling. He brought joy to all of us.

Our hearts go out to you and the family. Hopefully we will see you next summer as we're planning a family reunion in Beloit in July.

A contribution in Phil's name has been made to Hospice of the Valley, Santa Clara County.

Dear Aunty El, Dan, Priscilla and boys,

I was very sorry to hear about Uncle Phil passing and am sending you my deepest condolences. I'm sorry that I can't be with you tomorrow to say goodbye. When I saw the family picture that you sent to everyone on the long weekend at Birch Beach, I was glad to see that Uncle Phil still had that big, one of a kind smile on his face. I couldn't help but smile right along with him. I will always remember his sense of humor, the few times that I was lucky enough to play a round of golf with him, and having him ride along with me in the grain truck at harvest time in Saskatchewan offering his advise on how to procure the neighbors land! He was a good man and will be greatly missed.
All our love,
Cory, Brandi, Julia, and Dylan.

Dear Eleanor, Dan, Priscilla and family.

I'm sorry I can't be with you tomorrow for the celebration of Phil's life. I appreciated being able to see him a few weeks ago when Cathie and I were in Santa Clara. I particularly enjoyed seeing that as ill as he was, he had not lost his touch in providing ongoing commentary about Eleanor's choice of route to the restaurant. I am also very greatful that I had the opportunity to have one last short visit with Phil to say our goodbye's in person. As you gather for the service tomorrow remember that Jesus says that when two or more are gathered in my name, I am in their midst. May the calming hand of the Lord be upon you all tomorrow to bring you peace and strenght

Dear Aunt El;
Laura and I are very sorry for your loss. We were so glad that you and Phil could make it back to Wisconsin last year. It was great to have all of the Amend uncles and aunts together, for one last celebration. It reminded me of when we were kids and we would all get together at Lake Delavan for summer vacations.
It was wonderful that Phil was in good heatlh and great spirits the last time he was here; that is how we will always remember him.
Love,
Mike and Laura

Dear Eleanor and Daniel,
Please accept our sympathy and love. In remembering Phil I have to smile thinking back to his first days in Thunder Bay when he tried so hard to win your attention Eleanor; when he secretly took skiing lessons before meeting you on the hills; when he nearly turned blue showing you how well he could water ski in Lake Superior and dancing at the college...
And years later when you were both so proud of your boys at Notre Dame graduation weekends. So many good memories........

Love to you all, Vivian and Marc

We only get to play one round in the big picture and Phil played it with gusto. He left ball marks on every one of us and we will cherish those moments forever. As we all continue down the big fairway of life we can draw strength from his courage, direction from his wisdom and focus, and joy from his outstanding, albeit unique sense of humor. He was a gentleman and a scholar as well as a cornerstone of our family. He will be missed, however his legacy will always be remembered and often discussed on everyones nineteenth hole.

Dear Aunty El, Dan, Priscilla and boys,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. We called him "Jack", a cross between Nicklaus and Nicholson. He was awesome on the course, sharp, clever, humorous, and entertaining off of it. Uncle Phil was one of a kind, he had it all. I learned a lot from him and loved his advice. From England to India, Korea and China, he'd traveled a lot and always gave me a few tips, for the country I was headed to next. I will cherish forever the memories of our times together in Canada and especially in California. He was a great man, and will be missed by many.
With all our love,
Nate and Hye Ran

Dear El,Dan,Pricilla,and Boys,
I treasure my last few days that I spent with Phil. He was a wonderful brother and I will miss all of our phone conversations over the years, but especially the ones during the past few months. He was so couragous, positve, and offered his brotherly advise, humor, and love. I will miss
him so much. El, thank you for being
his soul mate and his angel who always was at his side and took care of him. You were his treasure, his rock, and, best friend. For that, I will always be grateful and I will always be here if you need anything.

Dear Amend Family,

I can only remember meeting Uncle Phil once at the Zanette family's sacred home of Birch Beach. However, it only takes one occassion to know when you meet someone great. While his life has come to an end, the legacy of who he was will remain forever in the minds of those who were lucky enough to know him, and in the hearts of those who felt his love. He will be greatly missed.

We are thinking about you and praying for you all.
