Richard Madden

CONOVER, NC - Richard "Dick" F. Madden, 81, of Conover died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley.
Born March 7, 1930, in Pittsfield, Mass., son of Francis and Albertine Croteau Madden, he was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School in Pittsfield, and Bentley College in Waltham, Mass. He served with the 112th Infantry Regiment in Europe and the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team during the Korean Conflict.
A 40-year employee of the General Electric Co., he retired in 1990, having worked in the Pittsfield, Mass., complex and holding a variety of managerial positions in the Hickory, N.C. organization. He served on the Advisory Board of Caldwell Community College, was an original member of the Catawba Valley DPMA, and a member of Catawba Country Club beginning in 1959 where he also served on the Board of Directors.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Rebecca Bolick Madden, in 1977, and a son, Mark Edward Madden, in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Alison, and husband, Greg Moore, of Matthews, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Lisa, and husband, Mark Bumgarner, of Claremont, N.C.; step-son, Greg Benfield of Newton, N.C.; grandson, Blake Moore; granddaughters, Sarah Madden and Brooke Bumgarner; brother, Dr. C. E. Madden and wife, Elaine. of Pittsfield, Mass., and Bradenton, Fla.; nieces, Darlene Madden and Kim Madden, both of Pittsfield, Mass.; nephew, Dr. K. E. Madden of South Windsor, Conn. MEMORIAL NOTICE: A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Claremont, with the Rev. Eric Hollar officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory with military rites by American Legion Post #16. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.
