Robert Gutman

GUTMAN--Robert, of Princeton, NJ, 81, on November 23, 2007. Influential architecture professor and critic. Educated at Columbia, then taught at Dartmouth before moving to Rutgers sociology department in 1957. Joined Princeton architecture faculty in 1969. Retired from Rutgers in 1996. Still teaching at Princeton at the time of his death. With great curiosity, he explored relationships among architects, buildings, users, and public policy. A generous scholar, collaborator, and mentor, he brought social science into the heart of architectural education and practice. He maintained the demeanor of both student and professor, with an inquisitiveness matched only by his challenges to prevailing assumptions. Among his published work was Architectural Practice: A Critical View (1988). Husband of the late Sonya Rudikoff, writer and literary critic. Leaves son John, daughter Elizabeth, and three grandchildren. Memorial service Saturday, January 19 at 3 pm at Princeton University Chapel.
