Robert MacMichael Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 1, 2014.
ELKINS – Robert (Bob) G. MacMichael passed away at his home Tuesday, April 29, 2014, surrounded by his family which meant so much to him. Bob was born on Nov. 17, 1925, in Concord, to John and Esther (Coburn) MacMichael. Bob has lived in New London/Elkins since the 1st grade.

Bob was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre at Guadalcanal and Okinawa. Bob owned and operated his painting and window company in Elkins, Bob's Shop, for over 50 years. He loved his work and worked diligently in it until physically unable to continue in 2012. He continued to manage the business until his final days and was very proud to have worked independently for as long as he had. In his earlier years Bob had also worked at Twin Lake Villa in Springfield, for Joy Manufacturing in Claremont and for the Cleveland family in New London during the 1960's.

Bob and Janet were presented the Third of a Century Award in 1996 for their community support and involvement. Bob is twice Past Commander and 55 year member of the American Legion Post #40. He is past Noble Grand and 60 year member of Heidelberg Lodge #92 IOOF and 50+ year member of the New London Service Organization. He is also a longtime member of the Elkins Chapel Society, the Elkins Bandstand Committee, The First Baptist Church of New London and New London Boys Club. In 1988 he received the Beall Award from the Boys Club for his dedication to family and community. Bob had also served the Town of New London as Selectman for 9 years, Ballot Clerk and Forest Fire Warden.

He was predeceased by a son, R. David "Bobby" MacMichael, in 1994.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Janet (Lull) MacMichael; a son, Douglas of New London; a daughter, Shannon (MacMichael) MacLeod and her husband, Philip of Elkins; six grandchildren, Melissa, Scott, Josh, Blake, Taylor and Lyndsey; and six great-grandchildren, Payton, Skylar, Levi, MacKenzie, Madelyn and Conor.

There are no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 6, at 11 a.m. at The First Baptist Church, 461 Main St., New London with the Rev. Dr. Allen Koop, pastor of the Elkins Chapel, officiating.

Burial with military honors and services conducted by Heidelberg Lodge #92 IOOF will follow at 2 p.m. at the Elkins Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lake Sunapee Region Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, P.O. Box 2209, New London, NH 03257 or the Scytheville/Elkins Sesquicentennial Committee for care of the Elkins Bandstand, c/o Fred Pryor, PO Box 132, Elkins, NH 03233.

I remember many happy times with Bob and family. These days go back to" Pleasant Lake Lodge" when I was a younger person and followed for many years after that when our family bought land and still live on Pleasant Lake. Janet, Doug and Shannon and family my thoughts are with you at this time.!

Dear McMichael Family - It is with such great sadness that we have learned of Bob's passing. Though we are new to the Town of New London, he has always embraced, with such warmth, our involvement in this wonderful Town, which we, too, have grown to love as deeply as he has. His stories, always told with such good humor and love of the history of the area, have enriched our knowledge of the area. His support of our leadership roles in the Town has made him a wonderful mentor for us. He is truly "The Mayor of Elkins",and always will be. We have lost a very special human being.

Dear Janet and Family, I had the great pleasure of working with Bob on several storm window jobs. He was always upbeat; I loved his "can do" attitude. And, how wonderful to know him as the great person he was. I'll always remember his smile and his warmth. With so much warmth to you, Bruce Williamson (Lebanon and Pleasant Lake)

Janet... Bob and I shared many a long reflection on life as we measured up canopy jobs. It was obvious that Bob consistently put his family, church, community and country ahead of himself. He was an honorable and inspiring gentleman and a privilege to have known. Virginia joins me in sending you and your family our heartfelt sympathies.

Dear Aunt Janet, Shannon and Dougie,
As you know, I grew up with my precious cousin Bobby, spending many wonderful hours/years in Elkins. The love and affection from my Uncle, always made me feel happy and secure. He would remind me from time to time, to be a "good girl", knowing that I was a spirited lass and could easily stumbled into trouble. Any sternness he used, always melted into love. I loved him as a child and as an adult. My memories of my Uncle Bob will always make me feel secure and loved.

My mother who passed away 10 years ago this month, adored her "baby brother Bobby". They now share a wonderful place in heaven.

I love each of you. God Bless you.
