Ronald Sveden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 3 to Oct. 4, 2011.
SVEDEN, Ronald F. Age 76, died peacefully, with his wife beside him, on September 29th in Brewster, after a long fight with lung disease. Ron was born on November 17th, 1934, in Salem, Massachusetts, to Ernest and Elsa Sveden, and then spent his childhood in Needham. He had a passion for hockey; he was the first goalie to receive the MVP in the Bay State League and continued to play at Michigan State University, where he studied restaurant management. He traveled the country setting up Howard Johnson's restaurants, and then settled down in Wellesley to teach junior high school science for ten years. In 1962 he started a summer fish market business on the Cape and was hooked. He moved permanently to the Cape in 1971 with his wife Nancy and two children Erik and Marta and there he stayed, running Sveden's Seafoods for the next 42 years. In the store he was noted for his smoked fish and specialty foods, but also for his honesty and sense of humor, and his blue eyes. His passions included the Boston Bruins, the Four Freshmen music group, old movies, an extra-rare steak, and above all, his wife Nancy and his children, grandchildren, and many friends. Ron was, for most of his adult life, involved in community theatre on the Cape. Yet his most recent fame was earned from a horticultural phenomenon. In June of 2010 Ron sprouted a pea plant in his lung and gained great public interest, appearing on The Today Show, Rachel Ray, and several TV shows in Japan. Ron is survived by his wife Nancy, son Erik and his wife Susan and two daughters Emily and Abigail, and his daughter Marta Rackmales, husband Tom, their son Robert and daughter Tizita, Ron's sister Elsa Scott and husband Bruce, Ron's brother David Sveden and wife Jane, brother-in-law Peter Frame and wife Cece, and Ron's many nieces and nephews and their children. There will be a memorial service for Ron on Saturday, October 8th, at 11 a.m. at the Brewster Baptist Church, where Ron and his wife spent many years working with youth, and providing brunches and dinners for the congregation. In lieu of flowers, any donations can be made in Ron's name to the Brewster Baptist Church. For online condolences and directions, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com

Hi Dad, I've been thinking about you lately...and....I miss you! ALOT! Mom's doing great...she's really amazing. Strong, and living life to its fullest....and absolutely as whacky as ever! It's a bit of a challenge getting her to slow down these days without you keeping an eye on her and "mellowing" her a bit...but she knows you're there just the same....keeping her safe and watching over her. Mart, Tom, Robert, Tizita, Sue, Emily, Abbie and I were all down on the Cape last weekend to celebrate her 75th Bday! I think she enjoyed having just her kids and grandkids to herself, she seemed really happy! We're all doing well dad, and life is good....but we still miss you. I love you!

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Ron.. MR FA-HOO as our little one always called him. We all built our first houses at the same time, and it does not seem as though all this time has passed. The photos brought back so many wonderful memories. Wish we had known as we were in Plymouth during the last of Sept and the first 2 weeks of October. We were so close, but yet so far away. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to you Nancy and to your family. May you always be blessed with wonderful memories. Nancy and Bruce Hutchinson, Ocala, Fl

Sveden Family
My condolences.
I had "Mr Sveden" in the 8 th grade at Wellesley Junior High. As i wrote this I remembered when a window fell upon me (due to construction) and my arm and fingers were bvadly cut.
He grabbed me and lead me to the nurse without much comment or fanfare.
I have the opportunity to see him at the fish store many years later.
A lovely man. A great teacher!

Hi Nancy! It's Sat. and Fred and I went to the movies tonight ---- i.e. we saw the video of Ron's life and then his slide show. What treasures of a happy, happy life. I especially love photo of his carving, also one of his clowning with rabbit ears and of course his always present contagious smile. You were an A+ wife through thick and thin, and his love for you shows thru in every photo. God bless you both. Peace and love, Granthia

I had Ron for Science in Junior High School. He was one of those teachers you remember for the rest of your life. His approach to teaching science was new and exciting to me, it never occurred to me that science could be interesting. I remember he explained how bubbles were made, it was as concept I had never thought of before, I mean, bubbles were just bubbles, weren't they? And, of course I was charmed by his blue, blue eyes and his charming personality; and his hair and his voice..tailor made for a teenage crush. But, he also knew my Mom and Dad, through the Poors, so he was kind of old for me.
My deepest sympathy goes out to all his family and friends who will miss him so much.

We had no idea that Ron was a Renaissance Man with many interests and achievements in his life. Although we met him once at Marta and Tom's wedding, we never forgot his warmth and sense of humor. May your many happy memories help to sustain you and know that he touched many lives.

Love, Sara, Mel, David, and Seth (Tom's aunt, uncle, and cousins)

We send our love to all of you and are thinking of you. Uncle Ronnie and I used to call each other Sherlock and Watson and I can't remember even how it started but I loved it whenever we said it. You were one of the most genuine and loving persons I have ever known and I will miss you. Such a wonderful life to celebrate.

As I was sitting in my dad's chair the night he passed away, reflecting on fond memories, I read this note from a Facebook entry my daughter Emily had posted...."Sometimes bad things are a blessing in disguise. Moving was hard, but now I understand the reasons for it. I love you Boodie (nickname the kids called my dad).....rest in peace."

Just about a year ago, we found out we had to move and leave our wonderful friends in Central NY. Moving was NOT something we wanted to do. A year later....being close by for my dad's final days, and to support my mom has been just one of the many blessings surrounding my dad's passing.

Dad...we will miss you, but as Jenny Frame said..."now you can breathe easy." I know you'd want us to celebrate your life and laugh about the best of times, and that's what we will do. I promise I'll take care of mom, and I'll do my best to make you proud. I love you.
