Sister Kathleen A. Carroll, R.S.M., 80, formerly of Dobbs Ferry, NY and Worcester Massachusetts, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at St. Patrick Manor, Framingham, where she had been a resident for a few years.
Sister was born in North Tarrytown, NY, the daughter of Thomas J. and Annie (Sloane) Carroll. Her father was a New York City native, and her mother was born in Ireland.
Sister Kathleen attended St. Theresa's School in North Tarrytown and graduated from Our Lady of Victory Academy in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She earned a bachelor's degree from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY, and a master's degree from Manhattan College in Bronx, NY.
She entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy in 1959 in Tarrytown, NY, and for many years was known by the religious name, Sister Mary Laura. After several years, she returned to her baptismal name of Kathleen. Sister made her Final Profession of Vows in 1967 in Dobbs Ferry.
Sister Kathleen ministered in the field of education, teaching in schools in the Archdiocese of New York for 38 years. In the year 2000 she shifted the emphasis of her ministry to the education of children with special needs, moving to Worcester and serving in the education program at Mercy Centre for Developmental Disabilities. She then accepted a position as an Advocate at Notre Dame Long Term Care, where she attended to the needs of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur for 14 years, until her retirement in 2014.
Sister Kathleen was predeceased by her brother Vincent J. Carroll and her sister Estella Carroll.
She leaves her sister-in-law, Mary "Joyce" Carroll of Elmsford, NY, a nephew James F. Carroll and his wife Deborah of New York City, and their children Samantha and Zackary; a niece Debora A. Busto and her husband Manny of Tarrytown, NY and her sons James and Kyle; a nephew John V. Carroll, and his wife Maryann of Towson, MD and their children Ryan and Jessica; a nephew Timothy P. Carroll and his wife Jennifer of Yorktown, NY and their children Allison, Sarah, Caitlin and Aiden; as well as her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. She also leaves her dear friend, Mary Bartholomew, who was a constant and loving presence to Sister during her illness.
The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas wish to extend deep gratitude to the Carmelite Sisters and to the staff of the Lourdes and Angel Guardian Centers at St. Patrick Manor for the dedicated care and comfort they provided to our Sister Kathleen during her time at St. Patrick Manor.
On Friday, May 6th, a Memorial Liturgy will be celebrated at 9:45 a.m. in the Chapel at Marion Woods, 150 Ridge Road, Hartsdale, NY. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
Memorial donations in Sister's name may be made to the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, 150 Ridge Road, Hartsdale, NY 10530.
