My sincerest condolences to Spencer's family. He was one of the most important influences in my life during some pivotal years, and I will always feel a great deal of love for him and remember what he taught me. I use that spiritual help every day.

I met Spencer in an art class at LSUS in 1994. We partnered up for several subsequent art classes after that first one. We had the best time drawing each other and he was so encouraging. Eventually, I took every one of his religion classes and spent hours with Spencer discussing life, art, religion, philosophy ... really, anything and everything under the sun. I loved talking with him and he always brightened my day. After leaving Shreveport, Spencer and I kept in touch until about five years ago. For a while we met for breakfast when I came home for a visit and would pick up right where we left off. I loved him like a grandfather and credit him with pushing me to question things and stand up for what I believe in. I truly feel he helped me become the person I am today. I have thought about him often since losing touch and will continue to think of him throughout my life. Words cannot express how thankful I am to have called this man my friend. I know I will see him again someday and am joyful know he is reunited with his beautiful wife.

We only met Spencer about five years ago. We had heard about him, always spoken of with awe and incredible respect. In that time, he continually proved his value to our daughters and their families. A wonderful southern gentleman, a scholar, an artist, counselor, patriot and invaluable confidant to so many. A very sad day is this. One in a million, or even more.

This man was perhaps the wisest man I ever knew. We are all of us better for having known him, listened to him, and put into practice the things this gentleman so gently preached. You will be missed, Spencer Murray, but you will not be forgotten.

The Final Salute

Brothers in Arms, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged Hand Salutes as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This Hand Salute is the last that we shall render to Rev. Spencer C. Murry our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Rev. Murry. And to Rev. Murry it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving as a chaplain in the U.S. Army. Rev. Murry, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 961 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Rev. Murry's family and loved ones.

Dr. Murray was always so kind and supportive of our mother, Lillian Martin, who passed away late last year. His ministry spilled over to many in the Shreveport area over their years there. May God continue to comfort and give you peace.
