Susan Boyar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 10, 2012.
Susan Mermelstein Boyar born Aug 25th 1927- Died December 9th, 2012 passed away peacefully. Susan was born in a small town Dragobrat in the Carpathian mountains. The town went by many different names depending whether it was under Russian, Hungarian or Czech jurisdiction. Susan was a Holocaust survivor losing all of her immediate family with the exception of Martin. Liberated by the Allies, Susan traveled to Italy, with other refugees. In 1947 she was brought to New York by cousins that had emigrated many years earlier.

In Brooklyn, she met and married her first husband Max Kessler. They produced 2 boys. The family moved to Los Angeles in 1957, where they lived until Max died from cancer in 1961. In 1962, she met and soon married Phillip Boyar and the family moved once again first to White Plains New York followed soon after to North Miami Beach. In 1972 Phillip died from emphysema. From the mid 70's until a few years ago, her constant companion was William Daley.

She leaves 2 Sons Michael ( Wendy) and Steven ( Brenda) and 3 wonderful grandchildren; Megan, Mathew and Shane. She has a surviving brother Martin.

For Susan the most important aspects of life was her family and friends which she had many. She loved music, she often sang to her children and grandchildren. She loved being with friends, good food and fun. She brightened up any room she walked into with her signature stack of red hair and always took great care to look her best. She could start a conversation with anybody. People always loved her and she them.

She battled Alzheimer's disease the last 10 years with great courage. She was a survivors survivor. She will be sorely missed by all she leaves behind.

So sorry for your loss. If not an imposition, I hope to make a connection between my father, David Mermelstein, also a Survivor from the Carpathian region and Martin. If someone thinks appropriate, I can be reached at [email protected]. Thanks

Our Aunt Susan was so charming. We loved to hear her stories, which always put a smile on our faces. We are not able to attend the funeral as Howies health is not good right now. His sugar went quite high after hearing of Aunt Susan's death, and he is on 5 insulin shots a day. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. We will always have wonderful memories of Aunt Susan and Bill at Aunt Beatty and Uncle Murray's when the family got together.

My aunt Susan was the kindest soul. She always wore a radiant smile, and always delivered a humorous quip, that ended with her her famous chuckle. She was my only blood aunt, and was never at a loss to recount stories from her youth. Her spirit and courage will live on in my mind until the day I leave this earth.
I already. miss her dearly.
