Suzanne Smith-King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 12, 2024.
Suzanne Smith-King passed away unexpectedly on October 3, 2024. She was the loving wife of Kevin King and beloved sister of Joan Smith (deceased), Mary Ellen Freundlich (David, deceased), Michael Smith (deceased) (Audra), Jeanne Smith Fenton (James, deceased). Dear sister in law of James and Pat Bryan (deceased), Louie and Nancy King, and Walter and Paulette Honigford. She is preceded in death by her parents Lloyd and Dorothy Smith of Greenville, PA.

Suzanne was the cherished wife of Kevin, with whom she shared a very special marriage built on companionship and love. Suzanne and Kevin first met on Valentine's Day, 1972 and were married on August 20, 1976.

Suzanne was a loving and dedicated Aunt to twenty nieces and nephews. She was a special Aunt who took an active role in their lives, making each feel special while bringing a sense of fun to their relationships. Suzanne was also very dear to many great nieces and nephews.

Suzanne was a graduate of St. Michael's high school in Greenville, PA and Villa Maria College in Erie, PA, where she earned a teaching degree. She believed in life long learning and earned a Master's degree in education from Kent State University. Moving to the Cleveland area in 1967, Suzanne taught first grade for 37 years at Ridgebury Elementary School in Lyndhurst, OH. In her role, she used her creativity, boundless energy, and keen sense of humor to inspire her students to love learning. Suzanne made a positive impact on the lives of innumerable children and families. During her career, Suzanne was awarded the Plain Dealer's "Crystal Apple Award", which recognized outstanding teachers in Northeast Ohio, after being nominated by a student and her mother. Suzanne was also a Martha Holden Jennings Foundation scholar.

A large part of Suzanne's life, beginning as a child with her Catholic family and attending parochial school, was her faith and service to the church. She was a co-chair of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church Decorating Committee in Chagrin Falls for nearly eight years. In her role, she used her artistic talent and her gifted eye for design to create beautiful displays and striking spaces. In recent years, Suzanne and Kevin regularly attended Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Macedonia.

In keeping with her sense of faith was her philanthropy. Suzanne believed that helping others was an important aspect of serving God and bettering herself. Over the years, Suzanne volunteered for many organizations such as the Cleveland Orchestra, the American Cancer Society, the Gathering Place, and the Emergency Assistance Center. In her neighborhood, Suzanne also co-chaired community service events for the Villas at Taramina that benefited parents and students in the local schools.

Suzanne believed in staying active and she enjoyed being busy. To that end, Suzanne enjoyed socializing with her many friends and had various hobbies. Until recently, when her Parkinson's symptoms forced her to slow down, she was co-chair of the social committee and was instrumental in organizing and working events at the Villas at Taramina such as Lady's Night, Book Club, Saturday Morning Breakfasts, Game Night and other special events. Notably, she started a Mah Jongg group that was a big success among her friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed playing Bridge, reading, and attending parties. Suzanne was an organizer with an eye for details, and she planned and executed many events for her husband Kevin's fraternity. Suzanne was a gifted artist, and she was always making a craft or designing a beautiful space, and at her home, she tastefully decorated for each season.

She and Kevin enjoyed traveling and frequently went to Florida or Arizona for the winter. Over the years, they traveled extensively throughout the country and in Europe. Suzanne took delight in new experiences and learning about different cultures, and greatly enjoyed visiting museums, gardens, and historic homes. Suzanne was the picture of class and sophistication, whether it was in her home decor or in her fashion and appearance. Suzanne was always impeccably dressed, with a stylish hairstyle and her signature red lipstick and red manicure.

Throughout the years, Suzanne's beauty never diminished. She was a lovely woman, inside and out. Suzanne will always be remembered as kind and generous, with a genuine talent for making people feel welcome and comfortable through her fun loving nature. Her wit and sense of humor brought smiles and laughter to those with whom she interacted. She was patient, understanding, and helpful, qualities which made her a brilliant teacher, and a source of comfort and cheer to her friends and family. Since her diagnosis with Parkinson's Disease, Suzanne was taking classes several days a week at InMotion in Beachwood, OH. The family prefers that, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to www.beinmotion.org, a nonprofit 501(C)(3) organization in Beachwood exclusively helping Parkinson's patients at no charge.

A mass will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 25. It is located at 9080 Shepard Road, Macedonia, OH. A Celebration of Life will follow immediately in the parish hall.

I was a student at Ridgebury elementary. Mrs. King made first grade very enjoyable. My best memories of her was doing Phonics at the chalkboards (in the double room) with the 2 first grade classes combined and walking to the nearby baseball field and sitting in the bleachers singing take me out to the ball game. She will be truly missed!!

What Pat and I will miss most about Suzanne is her unwavering ability to welcome everyone with an open heart and a genuine smile. No matter who you were or what kind of day you were having, her warmth and kindness were always there to greet you, even during the challenging times she faced with Parkinson“s. Suzanne was the perfect match with Emily in spearheading the Social Committee. Suzanne had an incredible gift for making people feel seen and valued.

Her legacy will live on through the love she shared, the friendships she nurtured, and the kindness she extended to all who crossed her path. Though she is no longer with us, her impact will remain in the hearts of those she touched.

Suzanne was a wonderful and close friend we shared because of our Sig Ep Fraternity Family. In every way she completed Kevin. Marie and I would visit and stay with Suzanne and Kevin in their homes, as did they in ours on the way to Arizona to visit her sister. The memories expressed by everyone on this site, echo ours, she was a WONDERFUL host and loving individual. Everyone's lives were enriched by her, especially Kevins. We hope you find comfort in this phrase shared with us by a Catholic Priest : "Death is not a period but only a comma, in the sentence of life." Fred &Marie Mills Colleyville, TX

Suzanne and I co-chaired the social committee at the Villas until recently, when she decided to take a step back. I think of all the countless things we've done and shared with each other over the years. We knew we could count on each other no matter what. That unspoken trust friends share. We would talk almost every day about anything and everything. Our conversations would start on one topic and somehow make a 360` turn and end up, God knows where. Suzanne and I shared so much these last few years, there were no boundaries, no time restraints or limits to what we talked about. I loved her. She will forever live in my heart.
Suzanne got me and I got her. We were on the same wavelength, just 10 years apart. Years ago, we laughed, when after interviewing Paula, the cleaner at the community center, Paula asked Suzanne if I was her older sister, when I was really 10 years younger.

Suzanne touched so many people, in so many ways, throughout her life. She had a natural welcoming way of making you feel good, happy to be you feeling. When Suzanne & Kevin moved in the Villas at Taramina, her welcoming way helped pave the way for many friendships within the neighborhood. Suzanne
was the kind of friend that you always wish for and lucky to have! We were lucky and blessed! Missing you....

Aunt Suzanne was an amazing woman who I always looked up to. She was always interested in what we were doing and where we were going in life. She gave great advice and was an inspiration. How I wanted to be as charming and sophisticated as she was. We will miss her dearly. Thank you Aunt Suzanne! Love you!

When we first met Kevin and Suzanne, we just clicked and became very good friends. We shared countless good times together. We will always remember the January and April birthday dinners, tribute band concerts at Lock 3, the Grove, and many other venues and the orchestra at Blossom. We also enjoyed many Happy Hours and games of Rummikub together.

Suzanne was always thinking of ways to beautify the Villas. In the early years we would clean up trash in empty lots in honor of Earth Day. At Christmas we would decorate fencing at the entrances with garland. Her beautiful decorating skills were put to great use in selecting furnishings for the Community Center. Suzanne was always thinking of ways to bring residents together. She was involved in organizing all our social activities.

Very grateful to share her company so often. She was and always will be part of our lives. So thankful for those of us who were with her on Wednesday night and were able to thank her, hug her and say goodbye. Rest in peace our beloved friend.

Suzanne was a beautiful and vibrant lady. And yes, she could really wear red lipstick. She took life head on, as when she told the usher forthrightly prior to 4:30 Mass that she had Parkinsons, and could he please seat her and her husband where Communion would be brought to her so she would pose no discomfort to others and there would be no risk of her dropping the host. A difficult admission to one's self, much less to others. But that was Suzanne. Thank you for spending time with us, Suzanne. Rest now.

I love all of my aunts, but Aunt Suzanne was special. She had a je ne sais quoi that attracted all to her. Was it her kindness? Her generosity? Sense of humor? Approachable-ness? Intelligence? Quick wit? Compassion? Sophistication? All of those qualities and more. She was beautiful inside and out. I saw her as a role model of what a true lady is. I always looked up to her and Uncle Kevin and their beautiful marriage-a true partnership and friendship. The world is truly dimmer without her in it. That dazzling smile and sparkling eyes. Always put together in modest pride. I love you, Aunt Suzanne!!

I have such fond memories of Suzanne when we were new teachers at Ridgebury. We had so many fun times together, including a trip to Greenville, PA to visit her mom and see a covered bridge. Even though recently we hadn't seen much of each other, we remained good friends and she will always have a special place in my heart. Sending prayers to Kevin and all her family.

I will fondly remember Suzanne for her remarkable recall of persons from her past. When we first
moved into the Villas in 2012 I was amazed that she recognized me from as far back as the 1970s when she was first grade teacher to both of our children. And she remembered them by name!
Suzanne will be sorely missed when and lovingly remembered by all of us.
Our sincere condolences go to her loving and supportive husband, Kevin.

Suzanne was my client and a friend. I always enjoyed taking my time with her (and her hair) because I so enjoyed talking to her. We could talk about social concepts, commiserate at the state of educational system, swap decor and design ideas, and she always took care to ask about me and my family. She was so kind, considerate and thoughtful with everything she did. I will miss our monthly rendezvous dearly. Love and light to Suzanne and all those who are missing her.

What a beautiful obit. I think I am still a bit in shock after hearing of my dear friends' passing. So sudden and unexpected. I was just with her that evening. I will never forget how she greeted me so warmly when I moved into The Villas, and every time we spoke. She was always so kind to me and encouraging. My prayers go out to Kevin and the rest of her family. The Villas will surely miss her as will I. She had the biggest and kindest heart. RIP, my dear friend. Let the angels guide you and keep you safe, until we meet again.

Mrs. King was my first grade teacher and the reason I became a teacher. Her passion and love for all she touched was contagious! She later became my mentor as I completed my teaching degree. She was my inspiration and I am so sorry to hear of her passing. What a beautiful life for a beautiful woman!

My children will never forget Suzanne as she taught most of them at Ridgebury Elementary School in Lyndhurst. They are talking about it right now as I write this. They absolutely loved her and so did the parents. So sorry to hear she too had been diagnosed with Parkinson“s as that is what my husband had before passing in 2022. Our love to her family as I know she will always be remembered and missed. Diane Voelker

Suzanne was the welcome center at the Villa. She was the first one I met when I moved in. She was so nice and helped me pull out of my shell. Her and I shared the same birthday January 11 but she was 2 yrs older. We had planned to go out to dinner with our husband in 2025. She will be missed really bad, I just loved her.
