1934-2019

Thomas ("Tom") Louis Westman was born in Herndon, Kansas on October 10th, 1934. He passed away in his home city of Bellevue, Washington, on July 15th, 2019 at the age of 84.
He was a 1957 graduate of the University of Washington with a degree in Chemistry, and went on to earn his doctorate in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1961.
Tom had a distinguished career in teaching, industry, and the medical and pharmaceutical world, later working as an administrator of mathematics and sciences courses for the University of Washington. He concluded his working career with ten years as a seasonal backcountry ranger, search and rescue technician, and wildland firefighter for the National Park Service at Mount Rainier National Park.
Tom was a avid outdoorsman with an affinity for snow skiing, backpacking, and mountain climbing.
He is survived by his son Kurt Westman, daughter in law Cathy Westman, and grandsons Kristopher and Cale Westman, of Seattle, WA; his son Mark Westman and daughter in law Lisa Roderick, of Talkeetna, Alaska; his partner Janice Swarts and her family, of Bellevue, Washington; cousins Mark, Lori, Andrew, Aaron, and Adam Tongish, of Tacoma, Washington; and his former wife and the mother of his children, Nancy Pickens, of Anaheim, California.
At Tom's request, there will be no formal or public services. Memorials and donations should be directed to the National Parks Foundation in Tom Westman's name.
