Vernon Scruggs, Jr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 29, 2024.
Chesapeake - "When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me, I want no nights in a gloom filled room- "Why cry for a soul set free"

Vernon "Tennessee" L. Scruggs, Jr. also affectionately called "Jr" was called home on July 27, 2024, at the age of 77. Born in Harriman, TN, he is the son of the late Vernon L. Scruggs, Sr., and Mrs. Ruby Wright Scruggs. Also predeceased by his older brother, Robert L. Scruggs and sister-in-law, Jo Scruggs.

Tennessee entered the Navy in 1965 and served on the Gold Crew submarine USS Vonstuben and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church, a deacon, former Sunday school teacher, and member of the Spares and Pairs Sunday school class. He retired as a car inspector with the Norfolk Southern Railroad after 38 years of service. Wanting to stay active upon retiring, he obtained his CDL and took a position with Chesapeake Schools and worked there for seven years. Tennessee had an unwavering faith and leaves a legacy filled with kindness and compassion. He always maintained a thankful heart for the many blessings he enjoyed. Tennessee will be remembered for his commitment, sacrifice and boundless devotion to his family.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Millie Nichols Scruggs.; daughters, Kreslin "Kristi" Banks and her husband, Marc, and Shannon Hastings; five grandchildren, Zach Pike, Amanda Spenyovics, Alex Hastings (Lauren), Ben Hastings (Kennedy) and Sam Hastings; five great grandchildren, Hailey Howe, Madison Spenyovics, Brooklyn Spenyovics, Emma Hastings and Cole Hastings; grandson-in-laws, Louis Spenyovics and Loren Howe; his sister, Mary Freeman (David); in-laws, Tom Nichols, Carolyn Brooks, Evelyn Collins, Barbara McCollum (Bob); and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to say a special thanks to Joe & Tena Strange, Sonny & Linda Clark, Larry & Nita Weeks and Ronnie & Bobbie Palmer for their love and support. Also, a special thanks for wonderful loving care by Angel's Touch homecare and Vangie Macasieb, Rochelle & Bobby; and special thanks to Bob and Barbara McCollum, and David and Elizabeth Brooks.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 2, 2024, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake. A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Richard Castleberry officiating. He will be laid to rest at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. Following the service, the family invites you to join them in the reception center at the funeral home.
