I thank Wally for starting me on my broadcasting career, for teaching me the right way to be a good journalist. Remember so well our long conversations and soaking up his wisdom. I used to call him, "Sir." Wally was an officer in the Army reserves, I believe, and outranked me after I left the Army as a 1st LT. He will be missed. Don Dare, MA, Journalism, 1974.

I just saw this sad news in the Grady Newsletter and suffice to say, my eyes filled with tears. Wally was absolutely the best and my very favorite prof at UGA. He made me laugh and think and think some more, and then go back and do it again. I never failed to learn something from him. He will be missed and I offer my deepest condolences to his family and all who knew and loved him.

I just now saw the sad news of Wally's passing, as I ran across the Flagpole tribute by John English on Facebook. Losing him is indeed a sad loss for for the community, and my condolences go to Charlotte and the rest of Wally's family and friends.

Dr. Eberhard was my master's thesis advisor at UGA in the early '80s. We stayed in touch, and he was a mentor to me as I worked as a journalist at the Athens Observer after graduating. Later on, he helped me decide to go for a Ph.D. at Indiana University and from there to a teaching career. He was a great professor and a wonderful role model for me. In class, he was relaxed, casual and often funny, but he held us to a high standard. His love of history was inspiring. And he was a great human being. He taught me so much, and I will never forget him. He enriched my life and the lives of so many other students and people he knew. My condolences to his family.

Wally was a great man and a role model of how to live your life. All who have had the pleasure of knowing him have had much richer lives as a result. Rest in peace.

I served on the Athens Regional Library Board with Wally for 5 years. He was so kind, measured, and thoughtful, taking the time to listen to everyone's point of view while also advocating on behalf of library patrons. I was so sad to read of his death. Much love to his family and friends.

Dear Charlotte, Andy, and family, not only did Wally teach me in the first computer editing course at UGA when I was in journalism graduate school, but our family was fortunate to live in the same neighborhood for over 20 years. He was a fine man and meant a lot to Athens by helping to make it a better place to live and work. My deepest sympathy in your loss. Betty McDaniel

A Man never dies who lives on in the hearts and minds of those who loved and revered him, Therefore, not only will Wally live on in eternity, but he will also never fade far from the hearts of those who called him friend; and there are many of us still around. May God grant His peace to his remaing family.

Please allow me to make a few comments about my admiration for Wally Eberhard and the shock and sadness I felt at the news of his passing. I first met him in 1994 when I interviewed for a journalism faculty position at the University of Georgia and he took me out to lunch at an Athens "soul food" diner. I did not get the position, but Wally strongly supported my application, and we have been good friends ever since. Since then we met several times at conferences and sometimes had dinner together. As a scholar and gentleman, he was one of the people I emulated and will miss the most.
