MASCOUTAH - Walter W. Butler, 88, of Mascoutah, born March 5, 1919, in Jackson County, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, in Assisted Living Facility at Silver Creek in Mascoutah.

Walter was a retired president and chairman of the board of the former First National Bank of Mascoutah. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of St. John UCC in Mascoutah, member of VFW Post 7682 in Mascoutah and a past 40-year member of Mascoutah Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ina E. (Ditterline) Butler, whom he married Dec. 24, 1941, in Equality and who died Aug. 19, 1997; his parents, Frank H. and Julia R. (Boucher) Butler; and four brothers, Daniel, David, William and Boyd Butler.

He is survived by two daughters, Sherrelyn J. Wachtel and husband, Jack E., of Elgin and Treva K. Carr and husband, Gary L., of Mascoutah; four grandsons, Greg Wachtel and wife, Julie, of Murphysboro, Mark Wachtel of Carpentersville, Doug Carr and wide, Tascia, of Trumbull, Conn., Nick Carr and wife, Lindsey, of Ava; four great-grandchildren, Leah and Johnny Wachtel and James Walter and Reagan Carr; a brother, Urban Butler and wife, Margaret, of Gorham; a sister, Francis Hubbard of Niles, Mich.,; and dear friend, Bobbye Patterson of Mascoutah.

Memorials may be made to St. John UCC, 55 West Church St., Mascoutah, IL 62258. Condolences can be sent to the family by visiting www.mollfuneralhome.com.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, in Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at St. John UCC in Mascoutah. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, in the church, with the Rev. Hugh Fitz and the Rev. Robert Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Mascoutah City Cemetery.

I work at silver creek and walter was just so sweet i really liked talking to him he always made me laugh, he will be missed and to all the family members i am so sorry for your loss.

Mr. Butler,
Sir, I didn't know you but I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the U.S. Army during WW II and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
