DELPHOS - DELPHOS – Alfred M. 'Al' Schmit age 104, passed away early Saturday morning in the same home he was born in, surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 26, 1918, in Delphos to Nicholas J. Schmit and Matilda (Youngpeter) Schmit.
Alfred is survived by his nieces and nephews; Karen (Jerry) Meier of Waverly, Ohio, Dr. James Schmit (Susan-deceased) of Celina, Elaine (Larry) Webb of Findlay, Dr. Arthur (MaryAnn) Schmit of Grove City, Jane (John) Wiehe of Fairfield, Dr. Nicholas (Linda)Schmit of Delphos, Dr. Michael (Pam) Schmit of Cincinnati, Mary (Bill) Massa of Delphos, and Thomas (Marie Antonioli) Schmit of Hamilton, Montana. Alfred is also survived by 22 great nieces and nephews and 37 great great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his siblings; Rev. Arthur Schmit, Rev. Earl Schmit, Jerome M. (Alice) Schmit, Robert (Patricia) Schmit, Sister Mary Alfred Schmit, SND, Viola M. (Eugene) Schmidt, Mary Ella Schmit, and a great nephew Christopher Schmit.
Alfred was co-owner of Schmit's Market and a former employee of Scott's Grocery. He was an Army Veteran of W.W.II and a member of V.F.W. Post #3035, American Legion Post # 268 both of Delphos. He was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He was a member and past president of the Delphos Club. He also was a past Delphos City Council member. Alfred was an avid card player, enjoyed yard work and flower gardening. He took great pride in caring for the family home. More importantly he provided loving care for his parents and brothers and sisters. He appreciated the hospitality of the Margaret Merschman family, Barb and Rick Burgei and all his friends at Jim's. He was a great Delphos Historian and storyteller. On his 100th birthday the City of Delphos honored him with a proclamation on September 26, 2018, as "Alfred Schmit Day".
Alfred's family would like to give special thanks to Mercy Health St. Rita's Hospice, Kim Ferguson, Dr. Jason Hageman, Dr. Ayyash Melhem, Kayla Wita, APRN CNP and the Delphos E.M.S. The family also expresses gratitude to caregivers; Stacey Stose, Dianne Will, Amy Wehri, Marsha Recker, Chris Briggs, Shelly Ward, Esther Bolen, Ruby Bolen along with all his past caregivers. Alfred was blessed to have had good neighbors and friends, Linda Martin, Frank and Marsha Dorsten, John and Carol Odenweller, Del and Scarlett Kemper, and Ron and Mary Lou Rode.
A funeral mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery with military graveside conducted by the Delphos Veteran's Council.
Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August8, 2023 at Weber Funeral Home, 1840 East Fifth Street, Delphos. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame or to the Delphos Kiwanis Club Shelter House Project. Online condolences may be shared at weberfh.net.
