John Hubbell Obituary

JOHN HUBBELL

LIMA — John Donald Hubbell, M.D. of Lima, Ohio peacefully passed on June 27, 2017, at home. Born April 19, 1924 in Centerburg, Ohio, to John and Daisy Hubbell, John was a 1942 graduate of Centerburg High School where he attended his 75th high school reunion in May. John married Norma L. Miller on June 25, 1949, recently celebrating 68 years of marriage.

The union of John and Norma was blessed with 3 children, Susan L. Hubbell, M.D. of Lima, John A.E. Hubbell, D.V.M. (Shelley) of Paris, Kentucky, and David D. Hubbell, M.D. (Alice) of Cartersville, Georgia; 2 grandchildren, Meghan M. Hubbell of Hilliard, Ohio and James A.E. Hubbell (Andrea) of Bowling Green, Ohio; and 2 great grandchildren, Connor and Charlotte.

John was called to the service of his country during World War II and served in the U.S. Army's Pennsylvania Engineers in the European Theatre. John enrolled at The Ohio State University after the war and received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees in 1952. John served an internship at St. Rita's Hospital in Lima and returned to Ohio State to do a residency in anesthesia. In 1955, John established an anesthesia practice in Lima, serving the community until his retirement at the age of 77. John was an active supporter of the sports and arts programs of Lima Senior High School holding football and basketball season tickets and attending Holiday and Harmony long after his children had matriculated. John was a patron of the performing arts enjoying Amil Tellers' productions and Lima Symphony and Friends of Music concerts at every opportunity. John served as Chief of Staff of Lima's St. Rita's Medical Center in 1968.He was an active member of a number of organizations including the Lima Rotary Club, The Academy of Medicine of Lima and Allen County, The Ohio State Medical Association, The American Medical Association, The American Society of Anesthesiologists, The Allen County Harness Horseman's Association, The Ohio Harness Horseman's Association, The United States Trotting Association, and The Ohio University President's Club.

John had two great sporting passions- Buckeye football and harness racing. A season ticket holder since graduating from Ohio State, John would climb the stairs to C deck to cheer for the Buckeyes and the band. A special memory is the family's attendance at the 1969 Rose Bowl when the Buckeyes defeated Southern California to win the national championship. John purchased his first trotting horse in 1955 and owned and raced trotters throughout his life, usually giving the horses the surname "Adonno" so they would be easy to find in the program.

John loved living in the city of Lima. He is remembered for his devotion to his wife, his family and his profession.

A private, graveside ceremony will be held in Centerburg. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Dr. John D. and Norma L. Hubbell Centerburg High School Alumni Scholarship Fund via the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon Knox County, P.O. Box 1270, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050 or the charity of your choice. Sincere condolences to the Hubbell family. I had the pleasure to work with Dr Hubbell for more years than I will say. In surgery we would have the chance to get to work closely with the doctors. Dr Hubbell would often talk about his dogs. I considered him a friend.
