John Merlino Obituary

Merlino, John

Merlino, John, of Newburgh, NY, formally of Brewster, NY, died Monday June 23, 2014 at his house. He was 87 years old.

Mr. Merlino was born January 22, 1927 in Manhattan, NY, son to the late Eugene and Jenny (Crisimati) Merlino. John served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and after enlisting received his GED.

John married Angeline Lato on October 9, 1949 in Bronx, NY. For their 40th wedding anniversary they renewed their wedding vows in Hawaii.

Mr. Merlino worked for The New York City Fire Department Ladder Company 38 in the Bronx, NY for 14 years before retiring. John owned and operated All County Fire Equipment in Brewster, NY.

Mr. Merlino was an avid sports fan; he was the first person in NY State to be a varsity coach without being a teacher. He coached the varsity football team the lacrosse team at Brewster High School. John was not only a coach but also a mentor to the students. He was a member of the Putnam County Italian American Club, the oldest charter member, the Knights of Columbus.

In addition to his loving wife, Mr. Merlino is survived by three sons, John E. and his wife Marisa of Hopewell Junction, NY, Frank E. and his wife Jane of Hopewell Junction, NY, and Lou and his wife Carol of Wallkill, NY, and his 7 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his two brothers Salvatore and Anthony.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday June 27, 2014 at 10:00AM at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church, Brewster, NY. Interment will be private. Friends may call at the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, NY on Thursday from 4pm-8pm

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to the St. Jude's Children Research Foundation.
