Richard Flynn Obituary

Richard C. Flynn. "Pard"
Richard "Pard" Flynn,  passed away on August 19, 2012 from complications with several ongoing health problems.  Richard was born in Everett, MA on June 7, 1936.  He was raised in Newtonville, MA. and graduated from Newton High School in 1955.  One of his first jobs was as a newspaper boy, getting up early before school to fold and deliver the papers with his friends.  He was active in the Sea Scouts often sailing around Boston Harbor and surrounding areas with his brother, Robert,  and friends (ask some of the Hall boys to tell you about his sailing abilities).  He enjoyed working with children and was a camp counselor during the summer.
After graduation, Richard spent four years with the United States Air Force and was ultimately stationed at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida where he worked in the motor pool and drove the school bus for the base children.  Five of the ten Hall children were students who rode his bus and he more than catered to their tardiness, the result of which was a fifty plus year family/friend relationship with the entire Hall family.   While at Patrick AFB, he coached Little League Baseball and was a scoutmaster for which he was commended by his supervisors.
Richard's visit in 1963 to the Hall family at Vandenberg AFB with his mother, Dorothy "Miss Dot"  (who became very close with Anne Hall, the mother of the ten children), led to Richard's relocation to Santa Barbara with his friend from Massachusetts, Jim Beatty.  Richard immediately found work at Raytheon in Goleta (where he was known as "Dick") and worked there for almost 33 years before retiring as a production control manager.
Richard moved to Lompoc around 1973 and lived with Jim, Ketrenia, Jimmy and Heather Hall for a year before buying the house across the street from them.  He commuted to Goleta daily and worked weekends at the LPI Cocktail Lounge (where he acquired "Pard") owned by Red and Jana Hunking and Harlan and Carrie Larson.  Pard made many friends at work and continued his friendship with them for the rest of his life.  Pard was a member of the Lompoc American Legion Post 125, Moose Lodge and the Lompoc Elks Lodge 2274, where he was an officer for nine years  and life member. He was a very loyal, generous and giving person and will certainly be missed by all who were lucky enough to call him " friend".
He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy McKinney Flynn in 1987.  He is survived by his brother Robert Flynn of Bellingham, MA and his two children, Jodi Winston and Dana Flynn; his cousins, Jane, Herbert and John; his close friends- Red and Jana Hunking of Lompoc and their son,  Jason of San Diego and the entire Hall Family (Joey(Diana), Johnny (Jane), Jimmy (Ketrenia), Jerry (Diane), Rita, Annie, Eddie (Sherri), Mark (Gale), Chris (Wendy) and Danny (Susan) and all of their children and grandchildren/too many to list); and, his numerous other friends and families.
Memorial contributions ( instead of flowers.) may be made in Richard/Pard's name to the Lompoc Elks Lodge 2274 at 905 E. Ocean Ave., Lompoc, CA 93436 for the benefit of the Local Aid to Handicapped Children Fund.
Services will be at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary Chapel, 123 North "A" Street, Lompoc, CA on September 5, 2012 at 11:00 AM with a Christian and military service at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery immediately followed by a Celebration of Life at the Lompoc Elks Lodge.

I met Richard working at the bank and I was so sad when I had to move away. He kept in touch by calling me almost every Friday to check in. The last time we talked he asked about my daughter and I wished him a happy birthday. I hadn't heard from him in a few months and decided to call and couldn't get through. I am deeply saddened that he has passed but I am grateful for the time we had.

He was like a second grandfather and I love and will miss him

I first met Dick in 1979 and have kept in touch with him throughout the years as we lived in many different parts of the country. When we moved back to this area a few years ago I enjoyed getting together with him for lunch at the Elks and swapping stories. A finer man I'd never met. He will be missed by many.

Pard was a great friend of mine for thirty years. He was a great bartender for me when we owned the LPI Lounge. Was always there when we needed him. Pard, you were a great friend. I will certainly miss you.

Pard was a very special and good friend of Betty and mine. We had many, many good times together. Pard was one of my favorite "boating buddies". I will miss him greatly.
