Gordon Smiley Obituary

SMILEY, GORDON LAWRENCE, M.D., 86, died Friday, August 18, 2006, in Naples, FL. He was born November 8, 1919, in Grand Rapids, MI, son of Florence Upjohn and Verne H. Smiley. He graduated from Central High School, attended the University of Michigan and received his medical degree from University of Louisville College of Medicine. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then took a residency in neurological surgery. He opened his practice in Saginaw, MI, in August 1951. In 1954, he moved to Louisville to join another neurosurgeon in partnership. He practiced there for thirty years. While living in Louisville, he took his family on summer vacation cruises in his 38-foot Chris-Craft. They cruised the Ohio, Tennessee, Mississippi and Illinois Rivers as well as Lake Michigan. After retirement in 1982, he moved to Marco Island, FL, where he enjoyed golf and continued to be an avid boater. In Florida, he became a sailor. He and his wife, Edie, enjoyed many cruises with other sailors from Marco Island to the Bahamas, the Florida Keys, Dry Tortugas and many lovely destinations along the west coast of Florida. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, International College of Surgeons, Collier Council of Tropical Fruit Tree Growers, Marco Island New York Times Crossword Puzzle Club, and Royal Palm Country Club in Naples. He was a past-Commodore of the Sailing Association of Marco Island (SAMI). His parents and siblings predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edith (Longyear); daughters, Gail Smiley of W. Linn, OR; and Caroline S. (Patt) Maney of Shalimar, FL; sons, David Alan (Sandy) of Prospect, KY; and Michael Longyear (Jodi) of Crestwood, KY; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. The family will meet with Gordon's friends Sunday, August 20, 2006, from 3-5 p.m. at Fuller Funeral Home, 4735 Tamiami Trail East, Naples, FL 34112. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Naples, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105.
