BILLERICA -- Lionel "Lee" Barros, a Veteran of WWII who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, passed away at his home, after a brief illness on Thursday night, February 17, 2011. He was 90 years old.
Lee was born in Lowell, MA, the son of Portuguese immigrants, the late Manuel and Maria Barros. His family returned to their home in Madeira Island, Portugal where Lee was raised until the age of 8. His family then returned to the United States settling in Danbury, CT. He enlisted in the Army in December of 1942 and served honorably until November of 1945. His unit saw significant action in the European Theater of operations, specifically the Battle of the Bulge. He was the recipient of the European African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. He took great pride in his service to his country and the comradery shared with his fellow soldiers.
Lee worked as a suit salesman at Jordan Marsh in Burlington for 30 years.
He had a great love for the game of baseball. He enjoyed tinkering in electronics, reading, and especially loved hot summer days. He was a devoted husband, proud father, and loving grandfather.
Lee was the beloved husband of late Patricia (McGrath) Barros, who passed on in 2004.
He was the loving father of Michael and his wife, Rose of Houston, Texas, Peter and his partner, Tim Benell of New York, NY, and Christopher and his wife, Minerva of Billerica. He was the brother of Anthony Barros of Derry, NH, Augusta Daly of Lowell, and the late Francelina Vaughan. He was the proud grandfather of Nicole, Barbara, Matthew, and Mia.
BARROS -- Lionel J. "Lee" Barros, of Billerica, formerly of Burlington, Feb. 17. Funeral service will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON on Tuesday, February 22 at 10 a.m. Followed by an interment in Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica.
