Dawn Lea Johnson, 65, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021, at Life Care Center in Michigan City, Indiana.
She was born Dec. 12, 1956, in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Russell Bannwart and Evelyn (Schilling) Bannwart.
A lifelong resident of the area, Dawn was the in-house supervisor at Michigan City High School for more than 20 years.
On Nov. 15, 1975, at the Springville Methodist Church, she married Wayne Allen Johnson and together they raised two sons, Bryan of La Porte and Steven of Rolling Prairie.
Dawn enjoyed fishing and gardening, and you could often find her watching all of the birds at the feeders at her home. She loved riding her four-wheeler and traveling to the Smokey Mountains, where she wanted to live.
Dawn loved taking care of kids and babysitting, and she was always rescuing dogs, including her two precious pit bulls, Capone and Pixie.
In addition to her husband and sons, she is survived by her niece, who she treated like a daughter, April Johnson of La Porte; her sister, Cindy (Bob) Browning of La Porte, Indiana; her special friend, Wanda Demuck of La Porte, Indiana; and a few other nieces and nephews.
Dawn was preceded in death by her parents.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, Indiana, where the family will receive friends for a viewing Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021, from 5 to 7 p.m. A service will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Cremation will take place.
