BRUCE GROFF Obituary

BRUCE GROFF Bruce Wayne Groff two-stepped his way to Heaven early Saturday morning, June 2, 2012, after suffering a heart attack. Bruce was born May 2, 1958 in Perry, Iowa, but grew up in Las Vegas, where he attended Eldorado High School and received his bachelor of fine arts from the University of Nevada. He moved to San Diego to pursue his master of fine arts degree from University of California, and later received his teaching credentials, including AP (advanced placement) studio art and special education from Chapman University. Passionate about being a teacher and well-liked by his students, Bruce was an educator in the visual arts and special education departments at Hilltop High School. Bruce also remained involved professionally as an active artist. His most recent artwork is currently on exhibit at the Jacobs Center in San Diego. A staunch advocate for arts education and professional development, Bruce was proud to serve in many roles related to art education, including San Diego County Art Education Association (CAEA), co-chair, 2009 CAEA State Art Conference, and Youth Art Month. He was named Outstanding Secondary Visual Art Educator in 2007. Bruce was preceded in death by his father, Gene Arthur Groff. Bruce is survived by his wife, of 12 years, Patti Groff; mother, Diana Rae Groff; twin brother, Brent Groff; brothers, Mark Groff and Michael Groff; nephew, Jason Groff; nieces, Katrina Groff and Veronica Reed; and stepdaughters, Rosalyn Prickett (Matthew) and Christina Kerr (Bryan). Although he had no children of his own, Bruce embraced his new role as "Grandpa Bruce" to Juliet and Elijah Kerr and Dylan Prickett. Bruce touched many, many lives with his infectious smile, ready laugh and quirky ways. As Bruce's nephew, Jason, put so well, "May you use the skills God gave you and paint Heaven a more beautiful place." We take comfort in knowing we were well-loved and that, with his ever-present smile, Bruce will be painting and two-stepping his way through Heaven's gates. A celebration of Bruce's life was held Saturday, June 9, at In Cahoots Dance Hall in San Diego. Donations in Bruce's honor may be made to the SD County Art Education Association, c/o Ron Jessee, SDCOE, 6401 Linda Vista Road, #321 South, San Diego, CA 92111, the Foundation of ALA, 75 Tri-State International, #222, Lincolnshire, IL 60069, or the American Heart Association.

Bruce, I waited a few days to write in your book, words can never express how sadden I was by your going on to Heaven. I know I will see you again, in that it gives me a peace that does pass all understanding. Time never changed how much I loved you and Brent and so enjoyed you coming to church with me. Know your missed, loved, and your memory will always be cherished.

My friendship with Bruce began at the Community College of Southern Nevada. I cannot remember if he was one of my students or an instructor.

My friend, Jacqueline Kane, purchased one of his "Salad Series" pieces, which still is installed in her home.

The last time I saw Bruce was more than four years ago when we met for lunch in San Diego.

The world was a better place when he walked and danced on its surface. I am sorry he left when he had so much more to offer everyone he touched.

It is so unbelievable how precious every day life becomes when a tragic loss of someone so special & gifted leaves this world so unexpectedly. Bruce was one of my devoted clients & a friend as well. We had a lot of laugh's together. He would always get excited about hosting his Chili cook off party every year. I hope his legacy goes on for that. His hair was surely one of his great attributes. I will truly miss him.
My deepest condolences to Patti & all of his family.

My favorite memory of Bruce was dancing with him on New Year's Eve 2011. I had no idea what I was doing and he didn't mind. He just kept twirling me around, making sure I was enjoying myself. He was be missed.

My thoughts and prayers goes out to all of you now and in the days to come.
Sometimes, it feels just like yesterday we were all walking down the halls or sitting down to lunch together, Bruce will be remembered for a lot of things and by a gazillion people. I will remember him most for always saying"I have confidence in you" even when I didn't.I never got a chance to thank him for that, it made a difference in my life and now in my Granddaughter's lives. R.I.P. God Bless

Bruce (Mr.Groff)
Black and white photography wouldn't have been the same if you weren't our teacher. With your passion and knowledge about photography, you expanded many of our horizons and made us view nature in a different way. If it weren't for your positive attitude everyday and your helpful advice, we would've never learned about art. We'll miss you deeply Mr.Groff and thanks for all you've given us
