GEORGE TURNBULL Obituary

GEORGE TURNBULL George Herbert "Papa" Turnbull, 94, passed away late in the night Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012. Born Feb. 20, 1918, in Binscarth, Manitoba, Canada, Herb was destined to live a fulfilled life. Raised on a family farm, Herb was a man of strength, wisdom and dignity. In World War II, he served as a mechanic in the Canadian Air Force. Upon his discharge, Herb returned to Canada, where he married the love of his life, Audrey Brown, Nov. 22, 1946. Drawn to the beautiful California weather, Herb and Audrey made a life-changing move to San Bernardino, Calif., in September 1949. Here is where they started a family of their own giving birth to their only son, Will Turnbull, May 5, 1953. In 1955, Herb and Audrey became proud U.S. citizens. Five years later, Herb chased after his dreams of becoming a proud business owner, in hopes to provide only the best for his family. They moved to Las Vegas, where he and Kelly Callahan founded Kelly's Pipe and Supply Co. in December 1960. He was dedicated to his company until 1985, the year he retired his business to George Shone. Herb had a strong passion for sharing his time with his dear family and friends. One of his favorite pastimes was travelling. Herb loved driving his 35-foot motorhome cross-country with his beloved wife, Audrey. They created countless memories together on the open road. For Herb, it was always about the journey, not the destination. Herb also loved that "unexplainable" freedom he felt on his motorcycle. He enjoyed riding with his son, Will and best friend, Elmer Nighswonder, until he reached the age of 76 years young. "Papa," then vicariously passed the family tradition to his granddaughter, Stephanie Turnbull, buying her her first Harley Davidson once she graduated college in 2010. He always said, "There never was a bad ride...some I wondered about, but never a bad one." A quote that will continue to live on by his son and granddaughter, who continue to ride in memory of him. Herb's passion for life and love for God were characteristics that undoubtedly shined through him. He touched many hearts and will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Turnbull. He is survived by his son, Will Turnbull; his daughter-in-law, Terri Turnbull, who graciously served as his in-home caretaker; and his granddaughter, Stephanie Turnbull. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, with services following, both at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Burial following at Palm Valley View Memorial Park.
