Shirley Lobbestael Obituary
In Loving Memory of Shirley Ann Lobbestael. After leading a life that was inspirational to her family, Shirley Ann Lobbestael passed away November 23, 2019 at the age of 91. Shirley was born in Dearborn, Michigan and resided much of her life in Mount Clemens/New Baltimore area. Shirley valued her family highly and was saddened by the loss of her son Michael Lobbestael, sister Leola Carly, brother-in-law Andre Carly and sister-in-law Donna Thomas. Until her death, she continued to enjoy spending time with her children Ric (Dessa) Lobbestael, David (Kathy) Lobbestael, Chuck (Diane) Lobbestael and Diane Lobbestael along with her seven grandchildren Ruth (Shaun) Shira, John (Rosa) Lobbestael, Anna (Jason) Kraai, Marshall (Jordyne) Lobbestael, Andrew Lobbestael, Abby Lobbestael, and Ally Lobbestael and two great grandchildren, Luke & Maeve. Her many nieces and nephews were also a joy in life. Because Shirley deeply valued education, she returned to Macomb Community College for her own personal fulfillment and graduated in 1984 after first graduating from St Mary’s High School in 1945. She subsequently returned to Oakland University to complete her Bachelor of Science degree in 1990. She had a lifelong love of learning that she conveyed to her family through her voracious reading. Shirley will continue to be a role model to her grandchildren, in whom she instilled the importance of education. In addition to her family, her friends, faith and community were the pillars of her life. As a member, she regularly attended Immaculate Conception Church and taught religious education at St. Louis Parish. Shirley’s faith was the core of her character and she showed it by living her life as an example. After retiring from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mt. Clemens, Shirley continued her lifelong friendship with the card ‘Club’ for weekly card games with her dearest friends, with whom she played for ‘laundry money’. Shirley shared her love of cards with her whole family, spending countless hours teaching her grandkids to play, never holding back and playing to win. She was also a regular volunteer at Chesterfield Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary, Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals and an Election Official at Chesterfield Township. Shirley deeply loved every one of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, touching each of their lives. She expressed determination throughout her life and her firmly held opinions were shared graciously. ‘G’ Shirley’s family responded to her love and affection and she will be dearly missed. Affectionately nicknamed ‘The Turtle’, her family will continue to ‘love you more’ as they remember, honor and celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be made in honor of Shirley Ann Lobbestael to MacDonald Public Library New Baltimore. Arrangements made by Gendernalik Funeral Home.
